Cadini - Ceria Merlone: A highly adventurous via ferrata that is a real treat for lovers of wild Dolomite via ferratas. Countless ladders, some with rather adventurous anchor points that add an extra thrill, lead right through the vertical rock walls almost entirely in “technical” climbing to the north-east summit of the Cadini.
Some will love it, others may find this via ferrata less successful – the fact is, it is a relic from the 1960s that certainly has its own appeal and charm. Undisputed are the magnificent views and panorama of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Cristallo, and Sorapis right around the summit.

PROGRAM
Day tour: Ceria Merlone
We follow the hiking trail and reach Fonda Savio Hütte in about 1.5 hours. Passing the hut, we continue into the impressive cirque of Cadin del Nevaio and onwards to the start. We can already clearly make out the line of the via ferrata from the hut.
Once at the start, we put on our via ferrata gear. Anyone who feels uneasy can also be additionally protected on the mountain guide’s rope. We then face more than 300 rungs and 300 vertical metres of ladder climbing. To finish, there is still scree and rough rocky ground up to the summit.
The panorama with the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the Cristallo massif, and Sorapis all close by is truly beautiful.
The descent follows the ascent route and requires quite a bit of improvisation and mutual respect towards climbers coming the other way on the via ferrata. The historic grading, with relatively low technical difficulty compared to the great exposure and adventurous anchor points, attracts many slightly overwhelmed mountaineers who can barely move when facing oncoming traffic. That is why, as a guided group, we focus on moving ahead safely and with foresight.

Who is Ceria Merlone suitable for?
The Ceria Merlone is ideal for sure-footed mountaineers with good fitness and some via ferrata experience. The difficulties look moderate on paper, but in practice the exposure and the many ladders feel significantly more serious.
Can I shorten the tour?
Yes, that is absolutely possible. If you wish, you can hike up to Fonda Savio Hütte the day before and meet the mountain guide there in the morning. This makes the day tour much shorter, leaving only about 600 metres of ascent instead of 1,000.
What equipment do I need to bring?
For the tour, you mainly need suitable mountaineering boots and weatherproof clothing. The detailed packing list will come with the confirmation email. Via ferrata equipment can be rented from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.
