The Fennberg via ferrata runs through the Unterland on the border between South Tyrol and Trentino, high above the vineyards of the Adige Valley. Almost all year round you can soak up plenty of sunshine here on the east flank of the Fennberg. In summer, however, the aspect and altitude usually make it very hot, so the route is best done in spring or autumn.
The via ferrata was completely refurbished in 2023 and is a rewarding objective for anyone who likes to combine via ferratas with beautiful hikes. It is exactly this mix that makes the tour on the Fennberg so enjoyable: a varied route, regular walking sections and the view down into the Adige Valley. If you are looking for a via ferrata in the South Tyrolean Unterland, this is the place for you.

Day tour: Fennberg via ferrata
The starting point for this via ferrata is in Margreid an der Weinstraße. From the car park we first head south through the vineyards to the start of the route. The via ferrata itself climbs ever higher in many steps, with walking sections in between. The hardest parts come right at the beginning; higher up there are only a few B sections and plenty of easier passages. The higher we climb on the Fennberg, the finer the view over the Adige Valley.
From the upper section, the end of the route, we enjoy a lovely panorama and then set off on the descent back to Margreid. The result is a very fine circular tour with 1,000 metres of ascent, most of it on the via ferrata, followed by a leisurely descent through a varied corner of South Tyrol. A well-rounded outing for anyone looking for a via ferrata that fills a whole day.

Who is the Fennberg via ferrata suitable for?
The Fennberg via ferrata suits sure-footed mountain walkers with some via ferrata experience who are looking for a longer route at grade C. The first steeper sections in particular call for clean footwork and some arm strength.
When is the best time of year for the tour?
The tour is usually most pleasant in spring or autumn. Because of its south-easterly aspect, the Fennberg can get quite hot in summer, whereas in the shoulder seasons you often catch very good conditions.
What do I need to bring for the tour?
Above all, suitable mountain boots and enough drinks, as it can get warm on the route. The detailed packing list comes with the confirmation email. Via ferrata equipment can be rented from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.
