ABOUT THE TOUR

A long, historic ridge traverse and via ferrata on Cristallino d'Ampezzo..
Difficulty B (via ferrata) · 8.5 h · Dolomites

The Ferrata Ivano Dibona on Cristallino d'Ampezzo is a via ferrata that follows the west ridge in the Cristallo massif and offers wide-ranging panorama almost constantly.

The route follows old wartime paths from the First World War, not always protected by steel cables. Along the way you discover numerous remains of positions, old war tunnels and other relics that show what the soldiers achieved here at the time. An old Alpini command post at Forcella Padeon was later converted into an emergency shelter for mountaineers.

Another highlight is the 30-metre suspension bridge Ponte Cristallo, known to many from the 1993 film Cliffhanger starring Sylvester Stallone. A few years ago, it was still possible to take the cable car up to Forcella Staunies and the Lorenzi Hut. Both have been closed until further notice since 2016. So for the moment there is no avoiding the extra ascent on foot from Rifugio Son Forca, which we reach by chairlift. In return, far fewer people are on the via ferrata today than in the past, when you could ride directly up to the start.

The many historical traces and the alpine character make the Ivano Dibona via ferrata a very rewarding day tour.

PROGRAM

Day 1: Ferrata Ivano Dibona
The starting point for this tour is the car park just below Passo Tre Croci. After a short equipment check, we take the chairlift up to Rifugio Son Forca. From there we continue on foot, ascending below the closed gondola lift to Forcella Staunies. Since the lift was closed in 2016, extra ascent has to be covered here. In around two hours we reach the notch where the start of the route is located.

Here we put on the harness, helmet and via ferrata set. Anyone who feels more comfortable can also be secured on the mountain guide’s rope on this via ferrata, which is not continuously protected by steel cables. Right at the start, one of the highlights of the tour awaits: the 30-metre suspension bridge Ponte Cristallo. It became famous through the film Cliffhanger. The first section is the centrepiece of the Ferrata Ivano Dibona. Besides the suspension bridge, a few ladders and old war tunnels add variety.

Further along, we encounter numerous positions from the First World War. Almost five hours should be allowed for the via ferrata itself. With a short detour, even Cristallino d'Ampezzo is possible as a bonus. At the end of this long day, we descend the final metres back to the starting point happy, but also tired.
Total time: 8.5 h | ↑ 800 m | ↓ 1,350 m | Difficulty: B (via ferrata)

Info: Without the lift, the approach is extended by approx. 1.5 h and 550 vertical metres.

Any changes to the program that may be necessary for various reasons (weather, conditions, accommodation booking situation, etc.) will always be made in consultation with the participants.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - (FAQs)

Who is the Ivano Dibona via ferrata suitable for?
The tour is suitable for sure-footed mountaineers with good stamina. The technical climbing difficulties remain moderate, but the day is long and the character of the route on Cristallino d'Ampezzo is fairly alpine in places.

What should I bring for the tour?
Most important are sturdy mountain boots and suitable clothing for a long day in the Dolomites. The exact packing list will be sent with the confirmation email. Via ferrata equipment can be hired from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.

Is the Ponte Cristallo really right at the beginning?
Yes, the famous Ponte Cristallo comes early on the route and is immediately one of the highlights. After that, however, the Ferrata Ivano Dibona really shows what makes it special: ridge terrain, wartime history and a long, varied line.
