The Leiternsteig on the Toblinger Knoten is a truly fascinating relic of the First World War. It was built by Austrian soldiers so they could man a post on the summit, and today you still climb up along the old paths of this historic route.
The name "Leiternsteig" (ladder route) is no coincidence: a total of 17 ladders lead, mostly through a chimney, straight up the vertical north flank to the summit. Today's route goes back to a historic installation from 1916, built under Feldkurat Hosp through the sheltered north chimneys. In the First World War the summit served the Austrian troops as an observation post directly opposite the Italian positions on the Sextenstein. A via ferrata experience right at one of the birthplaces of the via ferratas of the First World War.

PROGRAMME
Day 1: Leiternsteig on the Toblinger Knoten
We meet at the car park of the Auronzohütte and, after a short gear check, set off towards the Toblinger Knoten. At first we follow broad, well-trodden paths over the Paternsattel to the Drei-Zinnen-Hütte. Passing the hut and the Sextner Stein, we reach the Toblinger Knoten. The via ferrata starts on the north side of this rock tower. At the start we put on our via ferrata gear and work our way up the many rungs.
Wonderfully exposed, we follow the old route installations built by the Kaiserjäger, which fell into oblivion after the war and were finally restored in 1979. The summit is probably the finest viewpoint for the north faces of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. After enjoying the view, we take the descent route on the east side, where the much easier Feldkurat-Hosp-Steig leads back down to the Drei-Zinnen-Hütte. Finally, we follow the wide hiking trail of the approach back to the car park.

How difficult is the Leiternsteig on the Toblinger Knoten?
The Leiternsteig is graded difficulty C and requires via ferrata experience, a head for heights and sure-footed movement in exposed terrain. The descent via the Feldkurat-Hosp-Steig is much easier, but it is still an alpine route.
How long does the tour take and where does it start?
The tour is planned as a day tour and takes about 4.5 hours in total. The meeting point is the car park at the Auronzohütte. From there we head via the Paternsattel and the Drei-Zinnen-Hütte to the start of the route, and after the circuit back again.
What do I need for the tour?
You need suitable mountain clothing, sturdy shoes and, above all for the route, a via ferrata set and a helmet. The exact packing list comes with the confirmation email. You can rent any missing equipment from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.
