ABOUT THE TOUR
A wild via ferrata through the north face of Sassopiatto, with sweeping Dolomite views at the top and a return via the gentle south-west side.

Oskar Schuster was a Saxon who in 1895 found this route through the sheer and wild rock walls on the north side of Sassopiatto. The Oskar Schuster Via Ferrata leads from the Plattkofelkar, which lies between wild rock walls in the heart of the Sassolungo Group, up to the summit of Sassopiatto.
Once at the top, a spectacular panorama opens up, and a surprisingly easy descent leads from this massif, so forbidding on its north side, down a broad scree slope to the Plattkofelhütte and along the Friedrich-August-Weg back to the starting point at Sellajoch. The Plattkofelhütte also has its own history: it was built in the 1930s, destroyed during the Second World War, and rebuilt in the early 1950s.

PROGRAM
Day 1: Via the via ferrata
At the car park we carry out a short equipment check and, if necessary, distribute the required rental gear. From Sellajoch we first follow the hiking trail past the Steinerne Stadt and up the typical Dolomite cirque in switchbacks to the Toni-Demetz-Hütte at Langkofelscharte. Beyond it, we descend again to the Langkofelhütte, and from here follow the marked path into the Plattkofelkar to the start of the Oskar Schuster Via Ferrata. Here, snow often lingers well into summer.
At the start, we put on climbing harnesses and helmets and fit the via ferrata set. Anyone not yet fully at ease will also be additionally secured on the mountain guide’s rope. Via the ferrata on the wild north face, we gain height step by step and finally reach the summit of Sassopiatto. At the top we enjoy the panorama in the heart of the Dolomites before descending on the hiking trail on the south-west side to the Plattkofelhütte and along the Friedrich-August-Weg back to the starting point at Sellajoch. All in all, a long tour for fit via ferrata climbers.
