An airy via ferrata through the west face of the Rosengarten.

Santnerpass via ferrata (B/C, II): the Santnerpass via ferrata runs along the west face below the Rosengartenspitze up to the Santnerpass, home to the ultra-modern Santnerpasshütte. On reaching the notch, we also enter the so-called "Gartl" of the Rosengarten massif. This is where the legend of King Laurin was born - the king who turned his own rose garden to stone.
After the via ferrata, we hike past the Vajolet Towers and circle the Rosengartenspitze, returning via the Tschagerjoch to our starting point at the Kölner Hütte. A beautiful circular tour, topped off with a via ferrata that is not protected with steel cables throughout and therefore calls for sure-footedness.
A few nice snippets of local history: the route is named after Johann Santner, the Bolzano mountaineer who in 1878 was the first to find a way up over the pass into this cirque. And the Kölner Hütte, now often called the Rosengartenhütte, was built in 1899 by the Cologne section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club. If you like to take a closer look, the rock is striking along the way too: the Rosengarten massif is made of Schlern dolomite, rock that formed around 240 million years ago as a tropical coral reef.

PROGRAMME
Day 1: Circular tour at the Santnerpass
At the car park, we do a quick gear check and hand out any rental equipment needed. We take the cable car up to the Kölner Hütte, where we put on our harnesses and helmets right by the hut and attach our via ferrata sets. Anyone who doesn’t yet feel entirely comfortable will also be belayed on the mountain guide’s rope.
The via ferrata essentially starts just behind the hut. After a short warm-up section, we continue at an easy pace along the hiking trail, heading north beneath the west faces of the Rosengartenspitze. Unprotected scrambling passages keep alternating with cable-protected sections. Especially on the unprotected passages, sure-footedness and focused climbing are essential. Anyone who doesn’t feel comfortable will be secured on a short rope.
Once we reach the Santnerpass, we refuel at one of the huts and then continue on beautiful hiking trails deeper into the Rosengarten massif. Passing the Vajolet Towers and circling the Rosengartenspitze, we return to the Kölner Hütte via the Tschagerjoch.

How difficult is the Santnerpass via ferrata?
The route is graded B/C, with additional passages of grade II. Above all, it is important to know that the via ferrata is not protected with steel cables throughout. So you should be sure-footed and feel at home on easy rocky terrain.
How does the tour work with the lift?
We start at the car park, do a quick gear check and take the cable car up to the Kölner Hütte. From there, we follow the Santnerpass via ferrata, later passing the Vajolet Towers and returning via the Tschagerjoch. Using the lift, the total time is around 6 hours.
What do I need to bring for the tour?
Above all, you need sturdy mountain boots and suitable clothing for a day in the Rosengarten. Harness, helmet and via ferrata set can be rented from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee. The detailed packing list comes with the confirmation email.
