Sand in Taufers - Speikboden Via Ferrata (C): Another ideal via ferrata for beginners on Speikboden is this route. Alongside the two children’s via ferratas (Piraten and Michl) as well as the Avventura Via Ferrata, you’ll find a well-rounded selection of very worthwhile via ferratas for beginners and children as well as for more experienced via ferrata climbers.
If you’d like to give clipping into the steel cable a try, this is the perfect place to start. The via ferrata is very well protected, and the most demanding section comes right at the beginning of the route – with the option of bailing out via the emergency exit and doing something easier nearby if that C-grade section turns out to be a bit too tough. For everyone else, the climb continues for another 250 vertical metres up the via ferrata, with varied features such as a rope bridge and a suspension bridge. A very rewarding objective for a beautiful via ferrata day.
The name Speikboden, by the way, is often associated with the strongly scented alpine flower Speik, which is common in this area. Another explanation traces the name back to greasy, marshy meadows near the Michlreiser Alm. The ski area around Speikboden was developed in the early 1970s. Today, the mountain is especially popular in summer and autumn because of the short approaches and the varied via ferratas.

Day tour: Speikboden Via Ferrata
We meet at the car park of the cable car to Speikboden near Sand in Taufers in the Ahrntal. We then take the cable car up to Speikboden. Here, a wide range of different via ferratas awaits us. Our objective is the “most demanding” of the 4 via ferratas on Speikboden, although with sections of up to C at most it lies in the moderate difficulty range and, thanks to its length and escape options, is ideal for beginners as well as more advanced via ferrata climbers. Afterwards, there are excellent mountain huts and places to stop for refreshments, the perfect way to round off a day outdoors in nature.

Is the Speikboden Via Ferrata suitable for beginners?
Yes, the via ferrata is well suited to beginners if you want to ease yourself into sections up to difficulty C. The hardest passage comes right at the start. If that section feels too tough, there is an emergency exit.
How does the day at Speikboden unfold?
The meeting point is at the cable car car park near Sand in Taufers. From there, we take the cable car up to Speikboden and start the via ferrata. For the tour, you should allow around 4 hours total time. Afterwards, there are places to stop for refreshments.
What do I need for the via ferrata?
You need suitable mountain boots and clothing for a day in the mountains. The exact packing list will be sent with the confirmation email. You can hire a via ferrata set, harness, and helmet from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.
