The setting for this extreme classic among the via ferratas in South Tyrol could hardly be more impressive. Directly beneath the north faces of King Ortler, the highest summit in South Tyrol, the very demanding Tabaretta via ferrata leads almost vertically through the 500-metre rock face that separates the Tabarettahütte from the Payerhütte.
Steep, with no extra footholds in the form of rungs or pegs, the route climbs in impressive style, protected only by the steel cable. An absolute must for skilled and strong via ferrata climbers. It is also worth mentioning that the setting you move through here is simply fantastic and awe-inspiring.

PROGRAMME
Day 1: Tabaretta via ferrata
From the car park of the Langenstein chairlift in Sulden, we first ride the chairlift a good 400 vertical metres up to the top station. From here we follow the hiking trail to the Tabarettahütte. Below the rock faces, the approach path from the hut traverses, partly exposed, to the start of the Tabaretta via ferrata. Sure-footedness is already required here.
The 500-metre face now rises directly in front of us. There are many vertical sections to master and only a few ledges where you can stand comfortably and rest. A brilliant challenge for seasoned via ferrata climbers. The views out over and down onto the surrounding mountains make this via ferrata a real highlight in the logbook of every via ferrata enthusiast.
From the top of the route it is not far to the Payerhütte, impressively perched right on the rocky ridge. Here we refuel for the descent ahead before heading back to Sulden.

Info: Without the lift, the approach takes approx. 1 h and 450 m of ascent longer. Tip: on request, the tour can be combined with an ascent of the Ortler the following day. This is possible with a maximum of 2 people per mountain guide.

Who is the Tabaretta via ferrata suitable for?
The Tabaretta via ferrata is only suitable for very experienced and fit via ferrata climbers. The route is steep and exposed throughout, and demands plenty of arm strength and confident movement on rock.
What do I need for the tour?
Above all, you need suitable mountain boots and clothing appropriate for the weather. The detailed packing list comes with your confirmation email. Via ferrata equipment can be rented from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.
Can the tour be combined with an ascent of the Ortler?
Yes, this is possible on request. If, as well as doing the via ferrata, you are also an experienced mountaineer, we can combine the tour with an ascent of the Ortler on the second day. This option is possible with a maximum of 2 people per mountain guide.
