On skis up the Weißkugel – a great summit in the Ötztal Alps with a short ridge finale at the end.

The Weißkugel, at 3,738 metres, is the fourth-highest peak in South Tyrol and at the same time the highest outside the Ortler Group. A wonderful option is to climb this lofty summit on skis. As a finale, a short and easy ridge scramble even awaits.
Whoever stands on top is rewarded, thanks to its central position on the border between North and South Tyrol, with an exceptionally far-reaching panorama. Incidentally, the mountain’s name is based on an incorrect translation of the Tyrolean term Kogel, which describes a hood-like summit shape.

PROGRAM
Day 1: Ascent to the hut
The starting point is the car park of the glacier ski area in Kurzras, where we will meet. Alternatively, we can arrange another meeting point when booking and drive together to Schnals. After a short equipment check, we begin our ascent to the Schöne Aussicht Hütte at 2,842 metres. We will spend the night here.

Day 2: Summit day on the Weißkugel
The second day is all about the Hinteren Eis: first we cross the Hinteren Eis onto the Hintereisferner, and then continue over this glacier to the Hintereisjoch. From there, we climb a short, steeper section up to the summit ridge. Along a short, not overly difficult but exposed ridge section, we reach South Tyrol’s fourth-highest peak, the Weißkugel. For the descent, several variants are available to us. Depending on snow conditions, we will choose the most suitable one.

Info: The ascent in one day: via the Steinschlagjoch we reach the glacier, from where the route continues to the Hintereisjoch, the summit ridge, and on to the summit. Alternative: there is another option to climb the Weißkugel from the Langtauferertal or the Matschertal. Depending on snow conditions and other factors, we may also decide on one of these two ascents.
Any changes to the program that may be necessary for various reasons (weather, conditions, accommodation booking situation, etc.) will always be made in consultation with the participants.

How demanding is the ski mountaineering tour on the Weißkugel?
The tour is graded ZS and is aimed at experienced ski tourers who are comfortable on glaciated terrain and around crevasses. At the summit, a short, exposed ridge section with easy climbing also awaits.
How does the tour unfold over the two days?
On the first day, we ascend from Kurzras to the Schöne Aussicht Hütte. On the second day, we continue via Hinteres Eis, Hintereisferner, and Hintereisjoch to the Weißkugel, before descending back into the valley.
What do I need to bring for the tour?
You need the usual equipment for a ski mountaineering tour, especially suitable ski touring equipment and crampons for the summit finish. The detailed packing list will come with the confirmation email, and you can hire any missing equipment from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.
