Zufallspitze and Cevedale: two high ski summits in the Ortler Alps that can be combined.

The two summits of the Zufallspitze and Cevedale are among the highest in the entire Eastern Alps, yet offer technically relatively easy ways to climb above the 3,700-metre mark. You also have the chance to bag two summits with relatively little extra effort.
We are out in the Ortler Alps around the Marteller Hütte. The traverse links the two summits via a firn ridge about six hundred metres long.
Monte Cevedale was first climbed on 7 September 1865 by Julius Payer, Johann Pinggera and Josef Reinstadler. The Hintere Zufallspitze also marks the point where the Italian provinces of Sondrio, Trentino and South Tyrol meet. During the First World War, the front line ran across these summits; relics of it can still be found in the area today.

PROGRAMME
Day 1: Marteller Hütte & Marmotta
We meet at the car park by the Gasthof Enzian at the head of the Martell valley. Alternatively, a different meeting point can be arranged when booking, and we drive together to the start of the tour. After a quick gear check, we begin our ascent. We climb up to the Marteller Hütte and leave everything we do not need there. That still leaves plenty of time to climb one of the lower surrounding summits, such as the Cima Marmotta.

Day 2: Zufallspitze and Cevedale
On the second day, we head from the Marteller Hütte across the Zufallferner towards the summit of the Cevedale. The final slope steepens a little once more. From the Cevedale, the highest point of the Zufallspitze is not far, and we reach it via a short, easy connecting ridge. There are two options for the descent: back down lovely slopes along our ascent track, or over a short blocky ridge onto the Fürkeleferner and down it. Either way, we pass the Marteller Hütte again and return to the car park.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)
Is the ski mountaineering tour on the Zufallspitze and Cevedale technically difficult?
The tour is graded WS and is technically fairly easy for this altitude. The final slope up to the Cevedale is a little steeper, plus there is the short connecting ridge to the Zufallspitze. You should have the fitness for two long days and be confident on skis in high-alpine terrain.
Where do we stay overnight on the 2-day option?
On the 2-day option, we stay overnight at the Marteller Hütte. On the first day, we climb up from Martell to the hut and can then add one of the surrounding summits, such as the Cima Marmotta. The second day is then the traverse of the Cevedale and Zufallspitze.
What equipment do I need for the tour?
You need your usual equipment for a ski mountaineering tour, above all touring skis and ski crampons. The detailed packing list comes with the confirmation email. Any missing equipment can be rented from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.
