Plaisir climbing on Bolzano porphyry: above Bolzano, numerous enjoyable multi-pitch routes have been developed in recent years. Climbing on the reddish porphyry of the Bolzano basin is almost reminiscent of climbing in Utah and is yet another highlight of South Tyrol's diverse rock and climbing landscape.
The routes are very well protected, reached via short approaches and lie on the sunny side. With an ideal length of 6-8 pitches per route, we can comfortably climb 1 or even 2 routes. The beautiful view over the entire South Tyrolean capital sets the perfect scene for a great day of climbing. Depending on ability, conditions and mood, we choose the right line – and that is exactly what makes this day on the porphyry so relaxed and varied.

PROGRAMME
Day tour: climbing on porphyry
At the meeting point we briefly check our gear and then walk to the start of the routes, for example at the Pfattner Wände. At the foot of the route we put on our gear and gain height pitch by pitch on enjoyable climbing. The views over the Bolzano basin and the whole Unterland are truly beautiful and get even better with every pitch.
Thanks to the very low altitude and the south-facing walls, you can climb here in ideal conditions almost all year round. Only in summer is it often too hot here – then we are better off heading for the higher walls of the Dolomites. Depending on the tour and choice of route, we climb one or even two well-protected multi-pitch routes – with no rush at all; more a laid-back climbing day than one for stopwatch fans.
Afterwards, the inn at the car park is a great place to stop for a drink or treat your palate to local delicacies and regional specialities. A perfect climbing day for those who love to savour.
Any changes to the programme that may become necessary for various reasons (weather, conditions, availability of accommodation, etc.) are always made in consultation with the participants.

The tour is suitable for climbers seconding a rope, even with little climbing experience. Depending on the route chosen, we tailor the day to your ability. The well-protected multi-pitch routes on Bolzano porphyry in particular are ideal for an enjoyable day on the rock.
When is the best time of year for the tour?
Spring and autumn are usually best. Thanks to the south-facing location, it is often pleasantly warm above Bolzano early in the year. In high summer, on the other hand, it is often too hot – then higher objectives are usually the better choice.
What equipment do I need to bring?
The detailed packing list comes with the confirmation email. Above all, you need climbing shoes and suitable clothing for a day on the rock. Technical equipment can be rented from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.
