The Rieserferner Group lies north-east of Bruneck in the Pustertal. A wild and romantic mountain range with numerous remote summits, hiking trails and superb ridges. The area has a great deal to offer: along the line of the Schneebiger Nock, Magerstein, Hochgall, Lenkstein and Dreieckspitze there are still numerous glaciers that help shape the landscape. The mountain flanks are green, criss-crossed by countless streams and waterfalls (which, incidentally, are also perfect for ice climbing in winter), and rugged granite faces with beautiful, wild ridges. In winter, too, the area has reliable snow and tempts with numerous superb ski tours. Refreshingly free of large ski resorts, only one thing helps here if you want to climb one of the summits: put on your skins and start walking.

By fair means: in the summer months, this is also the motto on the Hochgall. No lift offers a shortcut here. Not least thanks to its beautiful shape, it is the great classic of the Rieserferner Group, yet even in high season you rarely meet many other mountaineers. The climbing on the north-west ridge is enjoyable and never difficult, and the rock quality is excellent. The approach and the tour as a whole, however, are long and demanding. The tour can be split over two days with an overnight stay at the cosy Kasseler Hütte.
