Drei Zinnen

THE REGION

The Drei Zinnen are probably the most famous rock formation in the Dolomites , and after the Matterhorn probably also in the world. A beautiful spot on earth where everything a mountaineer's heart desires comes together. The area around the Peaks has a turbulent history behind it, and above all the front of the First World War, which ran right along here, has left unique traces. Countless via ferratas lead along old war paths and, in some cases, right through the mountain into old war tunnels . There are only a few places on earth where history comes to life as much as here around the Three Peaks, and you get a unique impression of the inhuman efforts demanded of the soldiers here on the front.

But not only this dark chapter in world history took place here; from an alpinist point of view the north faces of the Zinnen have also been the scene of some of the greatest achievements of their time, and the boundaries of what was thought possible have been pushed back on several occasions. Starting with the first ascent of the Grosse Zinne by Paul Grohmann , Franz Innerkofler and Peter Salcher in 1869 , on whose route we still need the same time today as it did for the first ascent. Or the daring ascent of the north face of the Grosse Zinne by Emilio Comici with his climbing partners Guiseppe and Angelo Dimai in 1933 - even with modern climbing equipment it was an impressive experience and it is hard to imagine what these three exceptional climbers achieved back then. And these are just two of the incredible feats that have been accomplished on the walls of the Zinnen to date.

If you're thinking, "This is all very interesting, but definitely not for me," you'll be amazed as you walk around the peaks on perfectly trodden hiking trails. Lovers of iron paths will also find plenty to enjoy on the numerous via ferratas surrounding the peaks.

And if you think it's virtually impossible to climb one of the Three Peaks as a mere mortal, you should definitely contact a mountain guide and listen to their opinion – who knows, maybe you'll be standing on the summit of the große Zinne tomorrow! =)
