The Langkofel group rises to 3,118 metres high above Val Gardena and is the region's landmark. With its proud summits and countless bold spires and pinnacles, it is one of the most striking Dolomite massifs of all. So it is hardly surprising that the mountain guiding profession has a long tradition in the valleys around the Langkofel. Many of the best alpinists of their day also grew up in the shadow of this impressive massif and went on to write alpine history in the mountains of the world. 

What makes it unique is that, although the region is well developed for tourism, as soon as you venture deeper you can still find complete solitude and an incredibly wild setting. Whether you want to marvel at vertical rock faces up to 1,000 metres high from below while circling the Langkofel group on gentle alpine paths, venture onto some of the longest Dolomite faces, or tackle the adventurous normal routes that cleverly follow the easiest lines through seemingly impregnable rock faces: there is something for everyone here in a very small area. Summits such as the Plattkofel are also easy to climb on well-trodden paths. Fans of via ferratas are well catered for too and will find several in breathtaking surroundings. But that is not all: in winter, the area around the Langkofel is home to one of the best ski areas, with a seemingly endless number of superb huts that not only serve up local delicacies but also impress with creative dishes. If all that is too much hustle and bustle for you, take your touring skis, head into the snow-filled couloirs and leave the busy slopes far behind.
