The Rosengarten is home to the most famous legend in South Tyrol. It tells of King Laurin, who fell in love with Simhilde, the daughter of the King of the Adige, and carried her off to his realm with the help of a cloak of invisibility he owned. King Laurin's castle was surrounded by a beautiful rose garden that stretched as far as the Seiser Alm. Dietrich von Bern was sent to free the princess. He was quickly able to track down King Laurin, overpower him and free the king's daughter. King Laurin knew that his rose garden, visible from far and wide and intoxicatingly fragrant, had betrayed him, and he cursed it into rock and stone so that no one would ever see the roses again, neither by day nor by night. But he forgot about twilight, and so on some days King Laurin's rose garden still glows in magical shades of red in the evening sun.
