The Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park, which encompasses the Fanes region as well as the Sennes plateaus and the Pragser Dolomites , is one of the largest protected areas in South Tyrol . Magnificent alpine meadows are directly interspersed with vertical cliffs, and the barren plateaus are home to lunar-like landscapes and barely explored cave systems. It's hardly surprising that these remote and hidden regions are the setting for numerous Ladin legends.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find numerous activities here year-round in a wonderful landscape. Hiking , biking , climbing , mountaineering , and via ferratas —there's something for everyone. Even in winter, wonderful ski touring mountains beckon, providing an absolute paradise for both beginners and advanced ski tourers .

Particularly popular with alpine climbers is the Wetswand on the Heiligkreuzkofel , towering high above the Gadertal Valley. Here, Reinhold Messner and his brother Günther made alpine history. Their route over the central pillar literally pushed the boundaries of what was considered possible at the time. Wearing clunky mountaineering boots, the pair climbed a passage in 1968 that is now rated VIII. Consider that the scale at the time only went up to VI. Messner's conclusion after completing the route: The scale must be expanded. Another highlight in this area is the so-called Neunerplatte (V) – also a masterpiece by Reinhold Messner.
