The Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park, which includes not only the Fanes area but also the Sennes plateaus and the Prags Dolomites, is one of the largest protected areas in South Tyrol. Glorious alpine pastures give way abruptly to sheer rock faces, while the barren plateaus hold lunar landscapes and barely explored cave systems. It is hardly surprising that these remote, hidden places are the setting for numerous Ladin legends.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of activities here all year round in a wonderful landscape. Hiking, biking, climbing, mountaineering or via ferratas – there is something for every taste. In winter, too, superb ski touring peaks beckon, an absolute paradise for beginner and advanced ski tourers alike.

Especially popular with alpine climbers is the west face of the Heiligkreuzkofel, towering high above the Gadertal. This is where Reinhold Messner and his brother Günther wrote alpine history. Their route up the Central Pillar truly shattered the limits of what was considered possible at the time. Back in 1968, wearing clunky mountain boots, the two climbed a passage that is graded VIII today. Bear in mind that the scale only went up to grade VI back then. Messner's verdict after completing the route: the scale must be extended. Another highlight in this area is the so-called Neunerplatte (V) – also a masterpiece by Reinhold Messner.
