ABOUT THE TOUR
An airy rock ridge on the Eiger, rugged, exposed, and full of great mountain moments in the Bernese Oberland.

The Mittellegi Ridge on the Eiger is considered one of the finest and most impressive rock ridges in the entire Alps. Jagged rock climbing with dizzying views all the way to the summit of one of the most famous mountains in Switzerland – even though, at just under 4,000 metres, it is nowhere near the highest points in the Alps.
On one side, the Eiger North Face drops away dramatically down to Grindelwald and the green expanses of the Alpine foothills, while on the other you look out over the vast glacier fields of the Bernese Oberland. Anyone who brings the necessary acclimatisation, a head for heights, and the technical ability for climbing up to upper UIAA grade III will enjoy a mountain experience of the highest order on this tour. It is without question one of the dream routes in the summit book of every ambitious mountaineer.

PROGRAM
Day 1: Approach to the hut
We meet early in the morning in Grindelwald, at the terminal of the Jungfrau Railways. We take the train to Eismeer station. From here, we continue on foot in about three hours to the Mittellegi Hut. Due to glacial retreat, there are already a few easy scrambling sections to get into the groove – a good foretaste of what awaits the next day.

Day 2: Via the Mittellegi Ridge
The next morning, we set off early from the Mittellegi Hut. By headtorch light, we make our way towards the summit. On the fantastic Mittellegi Ridge, we climb into the day and enjoy the changing light of sunrise and the first warming rays of sun on the east ridge. After several hours of focused and exposed climbing, we reach the summit of the Eiger. But the tour is far from over here. The descent, too, demands full concentration before we reach the mountain station at the Jungfraujoch via the Eigerjöcher, passing the Mönchsjoch Hut. Afterwards, we take the cog railway comfortably back to Grindelwald.

Info: Anyone wishing to climb the route via the full Mittellegi Ridge, the so-called “Mittellegi Integral”, must meet slightly higher demands in both fitness and climbing technique. The tour lasts a total of 3 days, with 2 long climbing days on the ridge and several sections of UIAA grade V that must be climbed in mountain boots. If you feel up to this challenge, we would be happy to send you a corresponding offer. Please simply mention this in your enquiry.
Any changes to the program that may be necessary for various reasons (weather, conditions, accommodation booking situation, etc.) will always be made in consultation with the participants.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - (FAQs)
What requirements should I meet for the Mittellegi Ridge?
You should have very good fitness for a long alpine tour, a reliable head for heights, and climbing experience on rocky terrain up to around upper UIAA grade III. It is also important that you feel comfortable in exposed ground and already have experience on demanding alpine routes.
How does the approach to the Mittellegi Hut work?
We meet in Grindelwald and take the train to Eismeer station. From there, we ascend to the Mittellegi Hut in around three hours. Without the train, the approach is significantly longer. That is why using the railway here is the usual and sensible option.
What equipment do I need for the tour?
You will receive the detailed packing list with the confirmation email. Most important are suitable mountain boots and functional clothing for a long alpine tour. Technical equipment can be hired from us for a small wear-and-tear fee.
