An airy rock ridge to the summit of the Eiger, exposed and with plenty of superb climbing in the Bernese Oberland.

The Mittellegi Ridge on the Eiger is one of the most beautiful and impressive rock ridges in the entire Alps. Jagged rock climbing with plunging views, leading to the summit of one of the most famous mountains in Switzerland – even though, at under 4,000 metres, it is far from being one of the highest points in the Alps.
On one side, the Eiger North Face plunges dizzyingly down to Grindelwald and the green expanses of the Alpine foothills, while on the other you look out over the vast glaciers of the Bernese Oberland. If you bring the necessary acclimatisation, a head for heights and the technical skills to climb at upper grade III, this tour will give you a truly exceptional mountain experience. It is without doubt one of the dream tours in the summit log of every ambitious mountaineer.

PROGRAMME
Day 1: Approach to the hut
We meet in the early morning in Grindelwald at the Jungfrau Railway terminal. We take the train to Eismeer station. From here, it is about a three-hour walk up to the Mittellegihütte. Owing to glacier retreat, there are already a few climbing sections along the way to get into the groove – a good foretaste of what awaits the next day.

Day 2: Over the Mittellegi Ridge
The next morning, we set off early from the Mittellegihütte. By the light of our headtorches, we make our way towards the summit. On the fantastic Mittellegi Ridge, we climb into the day, enjoying the changing light of the rising sun and the first warming rays on the east ridge. After several hours of focused, exposed climbing, we reach the summit of the Eiger. But the tour is far from over. The descent also demands our full attention before we reach the top station at the Jungfraujoch via the Eigerjöcher, passing the Mönchshütte. We then ride the cog railway back down to Grindelwald at our leisure.

Info: If you want to climb the entire Mittellegi Ridge, the so-called "Mittellegi Integral", you need to meet somewhat higher requirements in terms of fitness and climbing technique. The tour takes 3 days in total, with 2 long climbing days on the ridge and several grade V passages, which you will have to climb in your mountain boots. If you feel up to this challenge, we will be happy to send you a suitable offer. Simply mention it in your enquiry.
Any changes to the programme that may become necessary for various reasons (weather, conditions, availability of accommodation, etc.) are always made in consultation with the participants.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)
What do I need to bring to climb the Mittellegi Ridge?
You should have very good fitness for a long alpine tour, a reliable head for heights and experience of climbing on rocky terrain up to about upper grade III. It is also important that you feel comfortable on exposed terrain and already have experience on demanding alpine tours.
How does the approach to the Mittellegihütte work?
We meet in Grindelwald and take the train to Eismeer station. From there, we climb up to the Mittellegihütte in about three hours. Without the train, the approach is considerably longer. That is why taking the train up is the usual and sensible option here.
What equipment do I need for the tour?
You will receive the detailed packing list with the confirmation email. Above all, you need suitable mountain boots and functional clothing for a long alpine tour. Technical equipment can be rented from us for a small wear-and-tear fee.
