The Fünffingerspitze – Daumenkante: thanks to the gondola up to the Langkofelscharte, the approach is pleasantly short for one of the most beautiful and spectacular climbing routes of this grade in the Dolomites.
That is exactly what makes the tour so appealing: you reach the start quickly and are immediately in the thick of proper alpine climbing. The route follows a logical line over the striking Thumb of the Fünffingerspitze, offering airy sections, solid rock and exactly the kind of exposure that is the reason for doing tours like this. No endless slog, just straight down to business – that makes the Daumenkante a real treat.

PROGRAMME
Day tour: Daumenkante
We meet at the Sellajochhaus, just below the Sella Pass, at the valley station of the cable car that whisks us up to the Toni-Demetz-Hütte. Our summit, the striking Thumb of the Fünffingerspitze, already rises impressively before us. From the hut it is only a few minutes to the start of our route.
We need a calm and ideally warm day, as things can otherwise quickly get unpleasant on this exposed arête. When conditions are right, an enjoyable climb on one of the most spectacular routes at this grade awaits us. The Daumenkante offers beautiful, logical climbing on a superb line, with just the right amount of air beneath your feet.
From the summit we abseil into the notch between the Thumb and the Index Finger and descend via the normal route of the Fünffingerspitze back to the Toni-Demetz-Hütte. We then take the cable car back down to the car park.

Info: Without the cable car, the approach takes about 2 h and 500 m of ascent longer.

The tour is suitable for sure-footed mountaineers with some climbing experience in alpine terrain. If you feel comfortable at grade IV+ and enjoy exposed sections, you will have a great time on the Daumenkante.

We meet at the Sellajochhaus and take the cable car up to the Toni-Demetz-Hütte. From there, the start of the route is just a few minutes away. That is exactly what makes the tour so appealing: a short approach, yet still proper alpine climbing.
What should I bring for the tour?
Above all, you need suitable climbing shoes and clothing suited to the weather. The detailed packing list comes with your confirmation email. Technical equipment can be rented from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.
