The Stüdlgrat on the Großglockner is without doubt one of the finest ridges in the entire Alps. A stairway to heaven that leads, with enjoyable climbing on superb rock, to Austria's highest summit.
There are climbing sections up to grade III+ to master, in a setting that could hardly be more beautiful. We climb on the sunny side of the Großglockner, high above the glaciers, and after reaching the summit and taking in the panorama of the Hohe Tauern, we descend by the normal route.
This makes the tour a varied traverse. It is precisely the combination of airy ridge climbing, high-alpine terrain and the long descent that gives this line its appeal. If you don't just want to reach the Großglockner but experience it on a truly beautiful route, the Stüdlgrat is exactly right for you.

PROGRAMME
Day 1: Approach to the hut
We meet at the large car park by the Lucknerhaus inn. Alternatively, we can arrange a different meeting point and travel together to the starting point in Kals am Großglockner. After a quick gear check, we hike up to the Stüdlhütte at a relaxed pace. The approach is a good start to the tour, giving us time to settle in, talk through the next day and calmly prepare everything once more at the hut.

Day 2: Großglockner via the Stüdlgrat
The alarm goes off early the next morning. After breakfast, we leave the Stüdlhütte by the light of our headtorches and climb across the Teischnitzkees glacier to the start of the Stüdlgrat. On enjoyable terrain, where climbing sections alternate with easier walking stretches, we make our way towards the summit. The higher we climb, the more impressive the views down become. After reaching the summit of the Großglockner, there is time to take in the panorama before we descend by the normal route, past the Adlersruhe, back down to the valley and the starting point.

Who is the Stüdlgrat suitable for?
The tour is suitable for experienced mountaineers with good stamina who feel at home on rocky terrain and already have some climbing experience. The Stüdlgrat is a demanding alpine tour, defined by a long summit day, sure-footed movement and a love of airy ridge climbing.
What equipment do I need?
You will receive the detailed packing list with the confirmation email. Above all, you need suitable mountaineering boots and warm clothing for the early start. Technical equipment can be rented from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.
How does the descent from the summit work?
After the summit of the Großglockner, we descend by the normal route and continue back to the starting point at the Lucknerhaus. It is precisely this traverse that makes the tour so varied, as the ascent and descent have a completely different character.
