The Stüdlgrat on the Großglockner is without doubt one of the finest ridges in the entire Alps. A ladder to the sky, leading in delightful climbing on superb rock to Austria’s highest summit.
You need to master climbing sections up to grade III+, all in an alpine setting that could hardly be more beautiful. We climb on the sunny side of the Großglockner, high above the glacier fields, and after reaching the summit and taking in the panorama of the Hohe Tauern, we descend by the normal route.
This makes the tour a varied traverse. It is precisely the combination of airy ridge climbing, high-alpine terrain and the long descent that gives this line its appeal. If you do not want to simply reach the Großglockner but experience it on a truly beautiful route, the Stüdlgrat is exactly the right choice.

PROGRAM
Day 1: Ascent to the hut
We meet at the large car park by the Lucknerhaus inn. Alternatively, we can arrange another meeting point and travel together to Kals am Großglockner, the starting point. After a short gear check, we make our way up to the Stüdlhütte at a relaxed pace. The approach is a good introduction to the tour, allowing us to settle in, discuss the next day and calmly prepare everything once more at the hut.

Day 2: Großglockner via the Stüdlgrat
The next morning, the alarm goes off early. After breakfast, we leave the Stüdlhütte by headtorch and ascend across the Teischnitzkees to the start of the Stüdlgrat. In enjoyable terrain, where climbing sections repeatedly alternate with easier walking ground, we make our way towards the summit. The higher we climb, the more impressive the views down become. After standing on the summit of the Großglockner, there is time to enjoy the panorama before we descend by the normal route, passing the Adlersruhe, and continue back down to the valley and the starting point.

Who is the Stüdlgrat suitable for?
The tour is suitable for experienced and fit mountaineers who feel comfortable in rocky terrain and already have climbing experience. The Stüdlgrat is a demanding alpine tour and is defined by a long summit day, confident movement and enjoyment of airy ridge climbing.
What equipment do I need?
The exact packing list will be sent with the confirmation email. Most important are suitable mountaineering boots and warm clothing for the early start. Technical equipment can be rented from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.
How does the descent after the summit work?
After the summit of the Großglockner, we descend by the normal route and continue back to the starting point at the Lucknerhaus. This traverse in particular makes the tour especially varied, because ascent and descent have very different characters.
