Großvenediger – Normal route via the Defreggerhaus
The "Ancient Majesty" of the Hohe Tauern is a great, proud glacier mountain and a wonderful objective for getting started in alpine mountaineering.

The Großvenediger is the highest summit of the Venediger Group in the Hohe Tauern. On every side, the 3,657-metre peak is draped in mighty glaciers and inevitably draws the eye when you are out on neighbouring summits.
Its relatively low difficulty makes it a very popular objective for anyone wanting to gain first experience in the high mountains and on glaciers. What must not be underestimated on the Großvenediger in particular, however, are its sometimes very large and impressive crevasses. That is exactly what defines the character of this tour: technically very doable, but a genuine alpine tour all the same.
The "Ancient Majesty", as the Großvenediger has always been called, does full justice to this proud name. It is an impressive peak that captivates countless mountaineers with its relatively moderate difficulty and, as a classic in the Hohe Tauern National Park, is popular for very good reason.

PROGRAMME
Day 1: Hut ascent to the Defreggerhaus
We meet at the Wiesenkreuz/Hinterbichl car park in the Virgental and, after a short gear check, take a relaxed ride in the Venediger-Taxi up to the Johanneshütte. From there it is about another 2.5 hours' ascent to the Defreggerhaus, our base for climbing the Großvenediger the next day. The approach is a good start: arrive, find your rhythm and gradually settle into the high-alpine surroundings.

Day 2: Großvenediger summit
The next morning we set off early for the summit after breakfast. Shortly after the hut we reach the Innere Mullwitzkees, which flows south from the summit of the Großvenediger. Roped up and with ice axe and crampons, we continue up the glacier. We reach the Rainertörl, from where it is still about an hour to the summit. Just before the highest point, a short firn ridge awaits us, which, depending on snow conditions, can lead to the summit in quite an exposed way. From the top, the view stretches far across the surrounding peaks, and on a clear day even as far as the Dolomites to the south. What we will not see, however, even in the best weather, is Venice – a rumour that stubbornly persists to this day.

Info: Without the Venediger-Taxi, the approach and descent take about 2 h longer and add 800 vertical metres.

Is the Großvenediger tour suitable for beginners?
Yes, the Großvenediger is an excellent objective for anyone who wants to gain first experience on a guided alpine tour. However, you should bring the fitness for two long days and sure-footedness. Despite the moderate difficulties, it remains a serious tour in glaciated terrain.
What equipment do I need for the tour?
Above all, you need suitable mountain boots and functional clothing for high-alpine terrain. You will receive the detailed packing list with your confirmation email. Technical equipment can be rented for a small wear-and-tear fee.
Where do we stay overnight on the tour?
We stay at the Defreggerhaus, the ideal base for climbing the Großvenediger. This lets us start early on summit day, already at the right altitude for the ascent.
