On Hexenstein, the South Edge is a Dolomites classic that is simply a joy from the very first metres.

The South Edge on Hexenstein is one of the great classics of the Dolomites and, thanks to its varied climbing and memorable passages, a must for every Dolomites climber. It is a particularly rewarding tour in autumn.
What makes the route so beautiful: it is never monotonous, keeps offering striking passages and takes place on really good rock. On top of that, the Valparola Pass is an ideal starting point, so you are quickly out in alpine terrain without a long approach. A tour for everyone who loves classic Dolomites climbing and wants not just to look at a well-known summit, but to climb it cleanly.

PROGRAMME
Day 1: South Edge on Hexenstein
We meet on the Valparola Pass next to Rifugio Valparola. After a short gear check (don’t forget your headtorch!), we set off towards the start of the route. The relics of the First World War Dolomites front, visible everywhere, will accompany us all day. A special surprise awaits us even before the climbing route begins.
After a first little adventure, we reach the start of the route and enjoy delightful climbing in the warm sun up the South Edge to the top of Hexenstein. Varied climbing passages and impressive individual moves make this day something special. And we climb on excellent rock throughout.
On the summit, we enjoy the view of the Ampezzo Dolomites and then descend via the normal route, through old positions and trenches, back to the Valparola Pass.

Who is the South Edge on Hexenstein suitable for?
The tour is suitable for sure-footed mountaineers, even with little climbing experience, who would like to experience a classic route in the Dolomites. The difficulties are around IV (UIAA).
What should I bring for the tour?
Suitable climbing shoes and clothing for a day in alpine terrain are important. The detailed packing list comes with the confirmation email. Technical equipment can be rented from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.
