ABOUT THE TRAINING

A day on ice, to get a first taste, try it out and be amazed by what is possible on these wintry formations.
1 day

Ice climbing for beginners: Try ice climbing for yourself and climb on the beautiful, yet equally fragile and short-lived ice formations that form anew every winter. If this unique form of climbing has always interested you, then this taster day is exactly the right option. Here you can spend a whole day getting a feel for it, enjoying yourself on the ice, and gaining a first sense of ice tools, crampons and movement on frozen water. It is not about being able to do everything already, but about giving it a proper try and finding out whether this form of climbing suits you and leaves you wanting more.

PROGRAM

Taster day: try ice climbing
We meet—depending on where the ice conditions are good—at a meeting point agreed upon when booking, and head to our ice climbing area. At the start, there is an overview of ice climbing, the necessary equipment, and how best to climb on ice. Afterwards, we get hands-on straight away and do various exercises close to the ground: proper footwork with crampons, body positioning, and swinging the ice tools. Once everyone is warmed up, we continue with belaying techniques and what you need to pay particular attention to in ice climbing. The last and most important part of the programme is ice climbing itself, along with belaying one another. We climb on top rope so that you can focus fully on the climbing and get a feel for the ice, the tools and the movement. The aim is that by the end of the day everyone has properly tried ice climbing and knows what it involves—so that you can say whether this form of climbing appeals to you and whether you would like to learn more.

Any changes to the program that may be necessary for various reasons (weather, conditions, accommodation booking situation, etc.) will always be made in consultation with the participants.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - (FAQs)

Who is the ice climbing taster course suitable for?
The course is intended for beginners who would like to try ice climbing in a relaxed setting. You do not need any ice climbing experience; a bit of enjoyment of movement and an interest in climbing are entirely enough.

What will I learn on this day?
You will get an initial overview of equipment, movement technique and belaying in ice climbing. Above all, you will try the climbing itself, so that by the end you have a good sense of whether this style of climbing suits you.

What do I need to bring?
You will receive the detailed packing list with the confirmation email. Technical equipment such as crampons or ice tools can be rented from the Südtiroler Bergführer for a small wear-and-tear fee.
