Ortler - Hintergrat: Along one of the finest ridges in the Eastern Alps to South Tyrol’s highest summit. On this tour we will traverse the Ortler and, after ascending via the magnificent Hintergrat, descend again by the Normal Route.
An imposing dream tour for any mountaineer, offering plenty of variety and enjoyable ridge climbing. This ascent is crowned by deep views and an exit directly at the summit cross. The Hintergrat on the Ortler is an alpine tour that stays with you for a long time and counts among the highlights in any tour book.

PROGRAM
Day 1: Approach to the hut
We meet in Sulden at the valley station of the Langenstein chairlift. Short equipment check and then ascent to the Hintergrathütte. The meeting point can also be arranged directly at the Hintergrathütte. The approach is perfectly signposted and involves no technical difficulties. In the evening we briefly discuss the tour and then enjoy dinner in a relaxed atmosphere.

Day 2: Hintergrat and traverse
The next morning there is an early breakfast at the hut, depending on the season at around 4 am, and then we set off on the ascent. First we have to reach the ridge. By the light of our headlamps, we climb upward. After that, beautiful climbing sections and impressive passages along the Hintergrat lead us towards the summit. Varied climbing with short snowfields in between and deep views characterise our route, which delivers us directly to the summit cross. Constantly protected on the rope, you can enjoy the tour to the full. With hopefully fine weather, we reach the highest point in South Tyrol. The views over the surrounding mountains are correspondingly grand. After a good rest and time for plenty of souvenir photos, we begin the descent via the Normal Route to the Payerhütte and from there down to Sulden.

Info: Without the lift, the approach is extended by approx. 2 h and 750 vertical metres.

Who is the Hintergrat on the Ortler suitable for?
The tour is suitable for experienced and fit mountaineers who are comfortable on a long alpine tour with climbing sections. Sure-footedness, a head for heights and good fitness for a long summit day are important.
What equipment do I need for the tour?
You will receive the exact packing list with the confirmation email. The most important items are suitable mountain boots and warm clothing for the early start. Technical equipment can be hired from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.
Where does the tour end after the summit?
After the summit, we descend via the Normal Route, pass the Payerhütte, and continue down to Sulden. So this is a traverse and not a return by the Hintergrat.
