ABOUT THE TRIP
Bolivia - Mountaineering and Cultural Tour: On this trip to South America, we will not only climb three peaks over 6,000 meters, including Sajama (6,542) – the highest peak in Bolivia, Illimani (6,439) – the second highest peak in Bolivia, and Huyana Potosi (6,088) – with breathtaking views of the capital, La Paz, but also get to know the country in a very special way. Tobias Martin – one of the three mountain guides on this trip – lived with his family in the Altiplano of Bolivia for three years. This offers a unique opportunity, combined with the mountaineering challenge, to get to know Bolivia and the Bolivians with their incredibly diverse culture. Where possible, we support local workers and projects, pay our cooks and drivers well, and offer small support to the Bolivian people within our means. The itinerary for this trip is diverse, and thanks to the experiences and contacts Tobias made during his time in Bolivia, we will be able to experience this wonderful country in a way that isn't possible for "normal" tourists, and we will also get to know the welcoming locals and their lives up close.
We will also be working closely with Gonzalo, one of the first and few IFMGA-certified mountain guides from La Paz.

PROGRAM
Day 1 & 2:
Travel by plane to La Paz, Bolivia. From the spectacular El Alto airport (4000müM), our first mountaineering destination is Huyana Potosi, over 6000m, within reach. The view down into the La Paz basin takes your breath away. After checking out of the hotel, we will take a short tour of the city center using La Paz's sophisticated gondola system. And of course, we focus on preventing altitude sickness: take it easy and drink coca tea.
Day 3:
City tour in La Paz. We visit three very different places in the city: El Alto, Zona Sur, and the bustling indigenous market in the city center.
In the evening, we will visit a Peña – a folkloric evening with typical Paceño food.
In the evening, we will perform a ceremony, K'oa, with a shaman. In this, we ask for admission to the summits, for our Bolivian brothers and sisters; and for well-being and health in our endeavors.
Days 5 & 6:
Acclimatization trip via Copacabana to Lake Titicaca. We are again accommodated on the shore in a beautiful hotel. Visit Isla del Sol by boat. Hike on the island. Return to La Paz.
Day 7:
Volunteer excursion by minibus and mountain bike: We will be taken to a pass over 5000m with our bikes, where we may even encounter snow, depending on the situation. From there, it’s a mountain bike ride with good brakes ;-) over the old road to the tropical zone 3,000 meters lower. We drive through the changing vegetation until we are surrounded by colorful birds and cheeky monkeys and treat ourselves to a tropical meal.
Days 8-10:
Now we're heading to the mountains! First, we'll be going to the Condoriri Group in the Cordillera Real.
Drive to Don Roque and his wife, who are waiting for us with a fine meal. So gestärkt wandern wir in etwa 3 Stunden ins Campo Base, wo wir je nach Vorliebe in der Hütte oder im Zelt übernachten. From there, we can see all the peaks of the Condoriri group: the right and left wings, as well as the Cabeza de Condor, the head of the condor. Possible destinations include: Pico Austria, Pico Tarija, Pequeno Alpamayo, Cabeza de Condor.
These peaks are between 5,200m and 5,400m high, making them ideal for preparing us for the 6,000m peaks. We put together the 2 tours depending on the technical skills of the participants.
On this tour, Gonzalo, our local guide, and our two cooks, Luz and Delia, will join us for the first time. And of course Roque with his donkeys or the Enduro, which helps us bring the food to the refuge.
Day 11:
Rest – Day of rest
Individual Program
Days 12 & 13:
Today we head towards Huyana Potosi, our first summit over 6000m. After setting up and checking the equipment, we will take a minibus to our starting point on the Zonzo Pass. Where there is first a fine lunch. From there, we hike to our hut, which belongs to a local guide friend and is exclusively for us! Early night snack...because the alarm clock rings shortly after midnight.
On the normal route, we climb to the summit of Huyana the next day: with a view from Lake Titicaca over the Illimani to the lowlands. Return to our hotel in La Paz and rest.
Huyana Potosi 6088m:
A frequently climbed 6,000-meter peak near a city, on the edge of the Cordillera. The panorama from the summit is incredible. You can see the Titicaca Lake on one side and the entire Cordillera on the other.
The day starts with a 1.5-hour drive to Zongo Pass. After lunch at the hut, we ascend to over 5000m and arrive at the Refugio after a leisurely 3 hours. There, we have time to chill and marvel. After dinner, we try to sleep. Early in the morning, the route goes over rock and scree, then over glaciers to the summit. The main difficulty is a short steep step, "la pala," at the bergschrund at the transition from the glacier to the ridge. From the hut to the summit, it will take us approximately 4-6 hours, and for the descent, it will take 2 hours to the camp and another 2 hours to the pass where a taxi is waiting for us.
Difficulty: WS
Starting point: Huyana Potosi Hut at Zongo Pass: 4700m, night: Alto Altamirano Hut: 5200m
Day 14:
Rest – Day of rest
Opportunity to take a tandem paragliding flight. During the last trip, almost everyone did this and was very enthusiastic.
Day 15:
Drive over Oruro (lunch and visit of the mine museum) to Uyuni at the Salar de Uyuni – the famous salt lake. Overnight in Uyuni.
Day 16:
The next day, we visit the Isla de pescado and spend another night in Uyuni.
The salt flat with its surreal landscape and the "fish island" is one of the most incredible and impressive landscapes in the world.
Day 17:
Drive to Sajama National Park. Ascend to the camp for those who are climbing Sajama. Quarters the others at the hotel.
Day 18:
Tour Acotango (6052) as an easier variant. Team Sajama: Ascent to the high camp.
Day 19:
Rest. Visit the Tomarape Ecolodge. Team Sajama: Summit and descent.
Day 20:
Night in a tent at the hot springs at the foot of the national park.We sleep in this magical place.Unwind in the thermal springs and early in the morning …
Day 21:
...before returning, we will climb back into the warm water.
Sajama 6549m:
The highest mountain in Bolivia is Sajama. A volcano and the dominant peak of the Western Cordillera, on the border with Chile.
On the day of arrival, we will ascend to the base camp. About 2 hours from the car, depending on the condition of the road. On the second day, we ascend to our high camp at 5,700 m. Depending on the condition, rope safety is necessary. 6-8 hours
The climb from the high camp starts steeply, and the fixed ropes installed the day before make the start much easier. We need 7-10 hours for the ascent and descent, depending on the conditions. It gets really bad when the summit is covered in penitents. Then you need a lot more time immediately and have to take buses, as the name already says...
Alternatively, we can climb directly from Tomarapi. A seldom-taken and equally beautiful route... first taken by Gonzalo Jaimes and me, Tobi;-) "ruta del silencioso"
Difficulty: ZS
Acotango 6052m:
Much more than a replacement tour! Thanks to the mine, we can drive the vehicles up to over 5000m. Then it’s mainly over ice and snow to the summit which divides Bolivia from Chile.
This summit is also very exhausting, but we are rewarded by the incredible panorama and the constant view of the majestic Sajama.
Time required: Car - summit approx. 4 hours. Descent approx. 3 hours.
Day 22:
Day off / Reserve day.
individual program... time for souvenirs
Day 23:
Return and flight home
Leitung:
Tobias Martin, Denys Thommen, Andreas Brunner, and Gonzalo Jaimes (one of Bolivia's few international mountain guides) are all UIAA/IVBV certified mountain guides, as well as our cultural guide Raul Calazaya (born and raised in La Paz, and has lived in Winterthur for several years. There are simple "normal routes" and more difficult routes for all three peaks – open to the top. We divide the summit groups by level and preferences, thus covering several difficulty levels.
Tobias Martin lived with his family for three years in the Bolivian Altiplano, which provided a unique opportunity to learn about Bolivia and the Bolivians, with their incredibly diverse culture, along with the mountaineering challenge. Where we can, we support local workers and projects, we pay our cooks and drivers well, and we offer the Bolivian population a tiny bit of support within our means.
More information:
The trip will take place with 8-12 participants. The price includes mountain guiding by four IVBV mountain guides. This makes us very flexible and allows us to respond and adjust groups during the tour. The cultural direction is handled by "the one and only" Raul Calazaya and Tobias Martin. All accommodations with half board and transportation. It may happen that we go out for dinner individually and you pay for it yourself. In return, we will organize and pay for various lunches, so that it all evens out in the end.
Look forward to an unforgettable journey to an incredibly exciting country. The participants of our 2025 trip were thrilled:
Eugen (South Tyrol):
"An unforgettable journey full of emotions
That was one of my most beautiful trips! The organization was absolutely perfect and was even adapted to our situation at short notice. Tobi's fundierte Kenntnisse und Rauls Heimvorteil haben das gesamte Erlebnis unglaublich bereichert. Our mountain guides were simply top-notch, and reaching the 6000-meter peaks is unforgettable.
I can't describe the emotions on the summits and at so many other places, they were to the point of tears.
Thanks to Tobi, Andy, Denys, and Raul, and to the entire crew that was involved, we were a fantastic team! I'm already looking forward to seeing you again."
Anna (Germany):
The trip to Bolivia was breathtaking - many thanks again to the group and especially to the guides for this unique experience! In the three weeks, we were able to get to know many different sides of this beautiful and diverse country. The culture, landscapes, and people there impressed me a lot. Tobi, Denys, and Andi always had an open ear and a helping hand for every concern. The three of them made sure that everyone in the group felt comfortable and always safe on the mountain. Highly recommended!"
Sounds good, but not perfect?
