ABOUT THE TRIP
Four major summits, plenty of glaciers and spectacular peaks in the Cordillera Blanca.
23 days · Cordillera Blanca
Peru – high-altitude mountaineering – Alpamayo: a high-altitude mountaineering journey to the Cordillera Blanca, a high mountain range in Peru that offers some of the most beautiful and spectacular peaks in the world. Among them is Alpamayo, which, at just under 6,000 metres, was named the most beautiful mountain on Earth by Alpinmagazin.
On this journey we will climb not only Alpamayo but also three other summits. At 6,034 metres, Tocclaraju will be the highest of them. A magnificent landscape awaits us, and even the acclimatisation tours lead us to dreamlike lagoons.
The trip combines several days in the Ishinca Valley with the second major section in the Santa Cruz Tal. In this way, altitude increases step by step, and we have time to adapt to the conditions in the Peruvian Andes. That is exactly what makes this tour so special: not just a single summit, but a whole series of strong mountain days in one of South America’s best-known regions.

PROGRAM
Day 1: Arrival in Lima
We travel individually to Lima and meet there – or, if possible, already travel together depending on the departure airport. This marks the beginning of this great journey to Peru and the Cordillera Blanca.
Day 2: Transfer to Huaraz
By bus we travel from Lima via the more than 4,000-metre-high Concocha Pass to the mountaineering town of Huaraz at 3,100 metres. From here, over the coming weeks, we set out on our multi-day tours and take care of everything that still needs to be done before heading into the mountains.
Day 3-5: Acclimatisation and lagoons
Over the next few days, we undertake several shorter acclimatisation outings to beautiful lagoons at the foot of the high peaks and complete the last preparations in town. We stay each night in a hotel in Huaraz. These days are important so that we can head up to the higher camps well prepared.
Day 6-14: Ishinca Valley
As soon as we feel well acclimatised, we head together with our Peruvian companions into the Ishinca Valley. Over the following days, we climb a total of three summits there: Urus Peak, Ishinca, and the 6,034-metre Tocclaraju. At the end of the valley, we establish our base camp. For the ascent of Ishinca and Tocclaraju, we also set up a high camp from which we make our summit bids. This means we spend several intense days in one of the best-known alpine touring areas around Huaraz.
Day 15: Rest day in Huaraz
This is followed by a free day in Huaraz to relax and gather fresh strength for the highlight of this journey: the ascent of Alpamayo. After the first summits, a day off feels especially good – and usually that is exactly the moment for a coffee, a bit of town life, and sorting the gear.
Day 16-21: Santa Cruz Tal
After the rest day, we once again set off into the mountains for several days. This time we head into the Santa Cruz Tal. After a two-day trek, we reach our base camp at the foot of Alpamayo. We then establish another moraine camp and continue climbing to around 5,500 metres, where we set up our high camp directly below the mountain. On summit day, the French Direct Route leads us up steep ice to the summit. Afterwards, we abseil back down the ice gully and spend one more night in high camp before dismantling it and returning to base camp. The next day, we leave the Santa Cruz Tal and return to Huaraz.
Day 22: Return journey to Lima
Then it is already time to say goodbye to Peru, its great mountains, and its welcoming people. The bus takes us from Huaraz back to Lima.
Day 23: Return flight
After a short stay in Lima, with the chance to gain a small impression of this chaotic city of millions, we fly back home.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - (FAQs)
How demanding is this trip to Alpamayo?
This tour is a serious high-altitude mountaineering journey with several summits at great altitude. For Alpamayo and Tocclaraju, you need very good fitness, solid crampon technique, and experience on demanding alpine tours.
How does acclimatisation work?
Acclimatisation takes place step by step around Huaraz, first with shorter outings to the lagoons and then in the Ishinca Valley with the first summits. In this way, altitude increases in a sensible manner before we take on Alpamayo.
What equipment do I need to bring?
You will receive the exact packing list with the confirmation email. Important items include high-altitude mountaineering boots and a suitable sleeping bag. Technical equipment can be rented from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.
