On the Schlern, the Burgstallkante is a long alpine climb leading to the distinctive high plateau of the Dolomites.

The Schlern is one of South Tyrol’s trademarks: on top, a vast plateau of green meadows that breaks off abruptly into a vertical rock face. The Burgstallkante is a beautiful, long route to a unique summit. It was first climbed in 1922 by Waldner and Wairinger.

PROGRAMME
Day tour: Burgstallkante
We meet at the Bad Ratzes car park above Seis. The time will be arranged when booking. After a short gear check, we first follow the path up to the Schlernbödelehütte and, just above the hut, below the rock walls, through a scree gully to the start of this beautiful climbing route on South Tyrol’s landmark mountain. The approach takes 2 to 3 hours.
The route starts with moderate difficulties and becomes steeper and more impressive the higher you go. A truly enjoyable climb on excellent rock. The top-out is just as impressive, as you step straight out of the vertical rock face onto a flat, green meadow.
The descent is either steep but shorter via the Gamssteig or a little more comfortable but longer via the Touristensteig back to Bad Ratzes. A wonderful climb whose memories come flooding back every time you pass through South Tyrol, as the Schlern is perfectly visible from the A22 motorway.

How demanding is the Burgstallkante on the Schlern?
Die Burgstallkante is a long alpine climb graded V+. For this tour you should already have some climbing experience and be able to handle a long day in alpine terrain comfortably.
How does the day on the Burgstallkante work?
The meeting point is in Bad Ratzes, above Seis. From there it takes 2 to 3 hours to reach the start of the route, which then leads up onto the Schlern plateau. The descent follows the Gamssteig or the Touristensteig back to the starting point. Allow around 9.5 hours in total.
What do I need to bring for the tour?
The key items are suitable mountain boots and clothing appropriate for the weather. You will receive the exact packing list with your confirmation email. Technical equipment can be rented from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.
