On the Schlern, the Burgstallkante leads in a long alpine rock climb up to the striking high plateau of the Dolomites.

The Schlern is one of South Tyrol’s landmarks. At the top lies a vast expanse of green meadows that drops away abruptly into a vertical rock face. The Burgstallkante is a beautiful and long route to a unique summit. It was first climbed in 1922 by Waldner and Wairinger.

Day tour: Burgstallkante
We meet at the car park of Bad Ratzes above Seis. The exact time will be arranged when booking. After a short gear check, we first hike up the trail to Schlernbödelehütte and, a little above the hut, below the rock walls, through a scree gully to the start of this beautiful climbing route on South Tyrol’s landmark. The approach takes 2 to 3 hours.
The route begins with moderate difficulties and becomes progressively steeper and more impressive higher up. A superb climb on excellent rock. The exit from the route is impressive as well, as you step directly out of the vertical rock face onto a green, flat meadow.
The descent is either steep but shorter via the Gamssteig, or a little more pleasant but longer via the tourist trail back to Bad Ratzes. A wonderful climbing tour whose memories flare up again every time you pass through South Tyrol, as the Schlern can be seen perfectly from the A22 motorway.

How demanding is the Burgstallkante on the Schlern?
The Burgstallkante is a long alpine climbing route graded V+. You should already have climbing experience and be able to handle a long day in alpine terrain with confidence.
How does the day on the Burgstallkante unfold?
The meeting point is in Bad Ratzes, above Seis. From there, it takes 2 to 3 hours to reach the start, then the route leads up onto the Schlern plateau. The descent follows either the Gamssteig or the tourist trail back to the starting point. Altogether, you should allow around 9.5 hours.
What do I need to bring for the tour?
Important items are suitable mountain boots and clothing appropriate for the weather. The detailed packing list will be sent with the confirmation email. Technical equipment can be rented from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.
