Ski mountaineering tour to the four-thousanders of the Western Alps: the high peaks of the Western Alps are not only a rewarding objective in summer. Many of the four-thousanders are in fact ideal ski mountains and are often far more enjoyable to climb on touring skis. This spares you the often endless slog across the vast glaciers, especially on the descent.
The light on the ascent makes up for the early start, and the panoramas from the deep-snow-covered four-thousanders across to the neighbouring peaks stay with you. For everyone who loves ski mountaineering, the high mountains of the Western Alps are a perfect objective in spring.

PROGRAMME
Day 1: Hut approach
Depending on the chosen tour, we arrange a meeting point and time so that we can set off in good time. The schedule naturally varies from tour to tour, but in most cases it looks roughly like this: after a short gear check, we normally head up to the hut on the first day after arrival, reaching it by early afternoon at the latest. As the sun is already strong in spring, when these tours are ideally done, and the snow softens quickly in the afternoon, we enjoy the afternoon on the sun terrace, go through the next day’s tour and get everything ready for the summit ascent: adjusting crampons, fitting harnesses and perhaps going over a few basics of glacier travel if this is the first ski mountaineering tour in the Western Alps for you or other members of the group.
Day 2: Summit day
We set off early on our ski mountaineering tour. After breakfast at the hut, we set out by the light of our headtorches or at daybreak. We are already high up by the time the sun bathes the surrounding summits in golden light. The ever-changing colours of the breaking day make up for the early start, and while dawn lasts, the effort of the ascent almost fades into the background. On the glaciers we move as a rope team. On the summit we enjoy a sweeping panorama – probably above 4,000 metres and with views over much of the Alpine peaks. In good conditions and with the right timing, beautiful corn snow slopes often await us on the descent, letting us ski back down to the valley almost effortlessly.
Info: Additional days at the hut with several tour options, or a traverse, are possible on request. Our mountain guides are certainly never short of ideas.
Any changes to the programme that may become necessary for various reasons (weather, conditions, availability of accommodation, etc.) are always made in consultation with the participants.

Which ski mountaineering tours on four-thousanders are possible in the Western Alps?
There is a wide choice, depending on your wishes, the conditions and the group. We plan classic ski mountaineering tours to high objectives in the Western Alps, usually with the hut approach on the first day and the summit ascent on the second. We arrange the meeting point, schedule and exact route depending on the chosen tour.
How does a 2-day programme like this usually work?
On the first day, after arrival and a short gear check, we head up to the hut. There we prepare everything for the next morning. On the second day we start early, often by headtorch, climb across the glacier to the summit and, if conditions allow, ski back down to the valley.
What equipment do I need for a ski mountaineering tour in the Western Alps?
You will definitely need your ski touring equipment and, for many tours, crampons as well. You will receive the exact packing list with your confirmation email. Missing equipment can be rented from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.
