ABOUT THE TOUR

A great glaciated peak above the quiet Matschertal – with a rustic hut, the Matscher Wandl, and a truly beautiful summit ridge leading to the Weißkugel.
3,739 m · Difficulty AD-, II, 40° · 2 days · Ötztal Alps

The Weißkugel is one of the most beautiful and highest summits in South Tyrol and in the entire Eastern Alps. The ascent from the rustic Matschertal leads through forests up into high-alpine terrain, where the Oberetteshütte stands at 2,677 metres.

The hut is run with great care, very comfortable and cosy, and the food is outstanding. The ascent to the Weißkugel the next morning is varied and, besides impressive glacier expanses, offers a steeper snow slope, the so-called Matscher Wandl, and finally, as a grand finale, a short but beautiful and enjoyable summit ridge climb. This tour can definitely be counted among the most impressive and scenically beautiful alpine tours in the Eastern Alps.

PROGRAM

Day 1: Ascent to the hut
We either meet directly at the starting point for this alpine tour at the Glieshof at the end of the Matschertal in the early afternoon, or directly at the Oberetteshütte in the late afternoon. From the Glieshof, the Oberetteshütte can be reached in about 3 hours.
Walking time: 3 h | ↑ 850 m
⌂ Oberetteshütte (2,677 m)

Day 2: Summit of the Weißkugel
On the second day, after a good breakfast, we set off early towards the summit. From the Oberetteshütte, we follow the well-marked path towards the small lake at 3,000 metres. From here, a trail leads us slightly downhill onto the lower reaches of the Matscher Ferner. Across the impressive glacier, made quite spectacular by its numerous crevasses, we continue towards Hintereisjoch and over the Matscher Wandl, a short steep flank, up to the start of the final rock ridge. Along the ridge, we reach the summit on enjoyable, exposed but not difficult ridge scrambling. The summit of the Weißkugel is a magnificent panoramic peak, which we will hopefully see for ourselves in good weather. The descent follows the same route back to the Glieshof.
Total time: 8.5 h | ↑ 1,350 m | ↓ 2,200 m | Difficulty: AD-, II, 40°

Any changes to the program that may be necessary for various reasons (weather, conditions, accommodation booking situation, etc.) will always be made in consultation with the participants.
