Along old paths through the north face of the Zugspitze – rugged, steeped in history, and wonderfully different from the usual summit ascent.

Zugspitze - Eisenzeit: Zugspitze is Germany’s highest mountain and one of the Seven Summits of the Alps. This historic route through the north face, boldly used by the tunnel builders of the cog railway, fell into obscurity for a long time and was only recently rediscovered. It offers a brilliant climbing experience on old paths with fascinating insights.
The climbing follows historic ledges in the lower section of the face, crosses iron ladders, and passes the old tunnel openings. Higher up, the face becomes steeper and more complex – yet without exceeding IV- (UIAA). A beautiful experience and a superb way to reach the summit of the Zugspitze away from the tourist crowds.

PROGRAM
Day tour: Eisenzeit
We meet in the car park of the cog railway at Eibsee in Grainau. After a short gear check, we set off in the dark for the start of our route on the north face of the Zugspitze. Following the crumbling paths of the tunnel builders from 1928, we climb higher. Over old ladders and past the tunnel openings, we tackle difficulties up to IV- (UIAA).
At the end of the old paths, the face becomes more alpine, steeper, and more intricate. With a good feel for route-finding, we reach the Riffelgrat after several pitches. Via the Höllentalsteig, we climb the final metres to the highest point of the Zugspitze. The descent is then comfortably by cable car.

Who is Eisenzeit on the Zugspitze suitable for?
The tour is ideal for sure-footed mountaineers with solid climbing experience who feel at ease in alpine terrain. The route requires stamina for a long day and an appreciation for a slightly unconventional, historic line through the Zugspitze North Face.
How does the descent work after the climb?
After reaching the summit of the Zugspitze, the descent is comfortably by cable car. This makes the tour manageable as a day outing despite the long climb, with the focus entirely on the ascent via the Eisenzeit route.
What should I bring for the tour?
Most important are suitable climbing shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. The detailed packing list will be sent with the confirmation email. Technical equipment can be hired from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.
