ABOUT THE TOUR
A first taste of a four-thousander – yet still a true alpine peak right in the heart of the Valais Alps.

Breithorn - Normal Route: Breithorn is widely regarded as the easiest four-thousander in the Alps. It is a border mountain on the main Alpine ridge, separating Italy’s Aosta Valley from the Swiss canton of Valais. The area between Breithorn and the Matterhorn is almost completely developed with cable cars, and it is marketed as home to the highest ski run in Europe. Breithorn owes many of its ascents precisely to this fact.
You can travel comfortably by cable car up to the Klein Matterhorn. From there, you descend to the Breithorn Pass and then climb the southwest slope to the highest of Breithorn’s five summits without any significant technical difficulties. Nevertheless, Breithorn is a beautiful mountain that should by no means be underestimated.
Not only does it make an impressive appearance, it scores above all with a panorama that is genuinely hard to beat thanks to its prominent summit neighbours. Almost lavishly, some of the finest and most striking peaks in the entire Alps line up one after another: Matterhorn, Obergabelhorn, Zinalrothorn, Dent Blanche and Weisshorn on one side of the valley, and the Monte Rosa massif, Dom and Täschhorn on the other.

PROGRAM
Day 1: Climbing the Breithorn
We meet at 7:00 am at the valley station of the Matterhorn Express. After a short gear check, we head to the cable car station and get a ticket up to the Klein Matterhorn. The Matterhorn Express takes us up comfortably in just under 40 minutes. The cable car ride alone is spectacular and unique in this form. As soon as we arrive at the top station, we finally step out into the world of glaciers.
We first descend gently onto the Breithorn Plateau and then make our way to the westernmost and at the same time highest point of the Breithorn, which consists of five summits in total. Thanks to the cable car, the ascent remains manageable, and that is exactly what makes this tour an ideal introduction to a four-thousander in the Alps – for anyone who wants to experience this feeling for themselves, even if they are a little less fit, have hardly any mountain experience, or simply want to enjoy a rewarding day at high altitude.
At the summit, we have plenty of time to savour the summit joy to the fullest and take in the surrounding mountain panorama before starting the descent and returning to the Klein Matterhorn.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - (FAQs)
Is Breithorn suitable for beginners?
Yes, Breithorn is a very good introductory tour to a four-thousander. The route is not particularly difficult technically, but we are still travelling in high-alpine glacier terrain with possible crevasses. Good basic fitness and sure-footedness are helpful.
How strenuous is the tour really?
Thanks to the ascent by Matterhorn Express, the climb remains very manageable at around 3.5 hours total time. Even so, the tour should not be underestimated, because you almost always feel the altitude above 4,000 metres. But if you move steadily and bring a bit in reserve, you will be in a very good position here.
What equipment do I need to bring?
For the tour, you mainly need suitable mountaineering boots and warm clothing for a day at high altitude. You will receive the exact packing list with the confirmation email. Technical equipment such as crampons can be rented from us for a small wear fee.
