THE MOUNTAIN

At 1 p.m., the sun is directly over the Einserkofel in the upper Fischleintal Valley, making this beautifully shaped rock tower part of the Sexten sundial. Even though it is not one of the highest peaks in the Sexten Dolomites, it is still a highly worthwhile destination for alpinists who enjoy hiking in a wonderfully wild Dolomite region and seek solitude. The Einserkofel presents itself as an isolated rock tower next to the Obernbachernspitze and is one of the truly rarely visited peaks in the Dolomites. The name "sundial" says it all: The route runs along the sunny south side and is ideal for soaking up some vitamin D.

ABOUT THE TOUR

Einserkofel - Normal Route: The tour to the Einserkofel offers everything you would expect from the "big" Dolomite peaks. Its low altitude belies the very alpine character of this tour. A long approach and challenging terrain with numerous scrambling sections make the ascent a full-day mountain experience that requires very good physical fitness. An overnight stay at the Zsigmondy Hut or the very rustic Büllelejoch Hut is highly recommended to split the tour into two days. This makes the "Einser" also a great introduction to the higher peaks in this region. This allows you to familiarize yourself with the typical characteristics of these adventurous normal routes in the Dolomites. Overall, a little insider tip for anyone seeking secluded and pristine tours in an otherwise very popular Dolomite landscape.

PROGRAM

Day 1: Self-guided ascent to the Zsigmondy Hut (or Büllelejoch Hut)
From the parking lot at the Dolomitenhof in the Fischleintal Valley, we follow well-marked and easy hiking trails past the Talschluss Hut to the Zsigmondy Hut (approx. 3 hours from the parking lot) or a little higher up to the Büllelejoch Hut, which, while wonderfully rustic, is not quite as suitable as a starting point for this tour. The turnoff toward the Einser is located near the Zsigmondy Hut.

Day 2: Meeting with the mountain guide at the Zsigmondy Hut
We meet in the morning at the Zsigmondy Hut and then have about 1.5 hours of ascent to complete before we can rope up and begin the scramble. 400 meters of varied and entertaining climbing past old World War I military positions (where the Einser played an important role) leads us towards the summit. The tricky and not entirely easy-to-read terrain requires a keen sense for choosing the right route until we finally reach the summit of the Einserkofel. The descent follows the same route as the ascent.

As a day tour (same price):
Also possible as a day tour for very fit mountaineers. This includes a 4-hour approach to the actual tour and a total elevation gain of 1,400 meters. The entire tour takes approximately 10 hours.

The story of the first ascent

Not much is known about the first ascent of the Einserkoferl. Only the fact that the two mountain guides Michael Innerkofler and Franz Happacher, together with Loránd Eötvös, reached the summit via the south flank on July 26, 1879. Their route is still considered the standard route and the easiest ascent to this adventurous and daring peak of the Sexten sundial. But alpine history has also been made several times with daring routes on the north face of the Einserkofel.
