THE MOUNTAIN

At 3,097 meters, the Pflerscher Tribulaun is not only the highest peak in the Tribulaun ridge, but also the most striking due to its distinctive shape. Although it lies quite a distance from the actual Dolomites, it is nevertheless composed of the same rock. Not only that, but Déodat de Dolomieu even discovered the Dolomites in a sense on the Pflerscher Tribulaun. He collected the rock samples, which he brought to Geneva for further examination and which would later become known as dolomite, here at the foot of the Tribulaun. Its bold shape, which indeed recalls the Dolomites, makes it one of the most difficult peaks to climb in the Stubai Alps. The easiest ascent requires climbing at grade III.

ABOUT THE TOUR

Pflerscher Tribulaun - Normal Route: The starting point for our ascent is the Pflersch Valley near Sterzing. By car, you can follow the unpaved path along the access road to the Ochsenhütte for a short distance to a parking lot. From here, cross the stream and follow trail no. 8 to the Tribulaunhütte at 2,368 meters. It's worth planning an overnight stay here and splitting this long tour into two days. The next morning, the short walk from the hut takes you to the start of the tour. This is followed by entertaining climbing sections and exposed walking sections. Surefootedness and a certain feel for this terrain are required. We will, of course, complete the entire ascent with ropes. The rock is often brittle, but this in no way detracts from the overall experience of this wonderful tour. The most technically difficult sections, rated grade III, are located just below the summit. Once at the top, you find yourself on a mountain with fantastic views and have completed an unforgettable climb. The descent requires full concentration once again. Via several abseiling points, the descent follows the same route as the ascent back to the Tribulaun Hut.

PROGRAM

We meet either at the parking lot, which is located on the access road to the Ochsenhütte at the end of the Pflerschtal valley, or directly at the Tribulaunhütte.

The trail to the hut starts at the parking lot, directly across the stream, and then simply follows trail no. 8 (2-3 hours from the parking lot).

The next morning, we set off from the cozy Tribulaunhütte directly to the start of the route to Tribulaun.

At the beginning of the difficulties, we tie into the rope and begin an exciting and entertaining ascent over varied terrain.

Easier climbing sections alternate with exposed walking sections. Towards the end of the route, it gets steeper again, and the most technically difficult sections await us just below the summit.

These sections are grade III, before the magnificent view from the summit of Tribulaun and the wonderful panorama reward the effort of the climb.

The descent follows the same route. We'll also abseil at some points. Back in the valley, you can be proud of having climbed one of the most beautiful and challenging peaks in the entire Stubai Alps.

The story of the first ascent

The first ascent attempts by English mountaineers with the help of Swiss guides date back to 1869. These failed without exception, and so the Pflersch Tribulaun was declared unclimbable. However, on September 21, 1872, Heinrich Waltzenbauer and his guide G. Pittracher reached the eastern summit. Finally, in 1874, Johann Grill and Munich tourists G. Hofmann and N. Winhart successfully climbed the main summit from Gschnitz via what is now the normal route, with Grill and Hofmann climbing barefoot. One year later, the mountain was climbed for the first time from Pflersch, thus opening up what remains the most popular climb to this day.
