PROGRAM
Day 1: Kasern - Essener Rostocker Hut
The starting point for the Hochtirol route is the parking lot of the Nature Park House in Kasern, in the farthest reaches of the Ahrntal Valley. From here, we ascend over the Umbaltörl and reach East Tyrol. We continue over the Reggentörl to the first stage destination, the Essener Rostocker Hut.
7 hours – ↑ 1,700 meters in altitude – ↓ 1,100 meters in altitude
Day 2: Essener Rostocker Hut - Großer Geiger - Johannis Hut
On the second day, we continue from the Essener Rostocker Hut towards the summit of the Großer Geiger (3,360 meters) through spectacular scenery and an imposing backdrop. From here, we descend via the Türmljoch to the Johannis Hut, our next stage destination.
6 hours – ↑ 1,200 meters of elevation gain – ↓ 1,300 meters of elevation gain
Day 3: Johannishütte - Großvenediger - Matreier Tauernhaus
One of the absolute highlights awaits us on the third day: the ascent of the Großvenediger. From the Johannishütte, we pass the Defreggenhaus and climb the Reintörl, continuing to the summit of Austria's fourth-highest mountain. Afterwards, we'll experience a truly spectacular descent: a 2,000-meter descent to Innergschlöß. Many say it's the most beautiful valley head in the Eastern Alps – we'll see for ourselves. Afterwards, we'll have to continue a bit further to the Matreier Tauernhaus, where we'll stay for the next night.
7 hours – ↑ 1,500 meters of elevation gain – ↓ 2,000 meters of elevation gain
Day 4: Matreier Tauernhaus - Stubacher Sonnblick - Rudolfshütte
Day 4 features a longer stage: From the Matreier Tauernhaus, the hike ascends to Lake Dabersee and continues to the Amertaler Höhe at 2,784 meters. A short descent into the Landeck Valley is followed by another ascent to the Granatscharte and further to the Stubacher Sonnblick (3,088 meters). After the descent down to the Rudolfshütte, this stage is also completed.
9 hours – ↑ 2,000 meters of elevation gain – ↓ 1,300 meters of elevation gain
Day 5: Rudolfshütte - Granatspitze - Kalser Taurerwirt - Stüdlhütte
On the fifth day, the first task is to ascend the Granatspitze (3,086 meters). A fantastic and long descent descends to the Dorfersee lake and across the flat Dorfertal valley to the Kalser Taurerwirt. From there, a taxi will take us to the Lucknerhaus. We'll fortify ourselves in the valley and take the subsequent climb to the Stüdlhütte at a leisurely pace.
9 hours – ↑ 1,750 meters elevation gain – ↓ 1,700 meters elevation loss
Day 6: Großglockner
The best comes last: The grand finale of the Hochtirol tour awaits us on the last day, with the ascent of the Großglockner – Austria's highest peak. It's also the most challenging stage, and we'll have to put our skiing and climbing skills to the test. The subsequent descent from Adlersruhe over the Ködnitzkees to the Stüdlhütte and further down to the Lucknerhaus means that this wonderful ski mountaineering traverse is slowly but surely coming to an end.
8 hours – ↑ 1,000 meters of elevation gain – ↓ 1,800 meters of elevation gain
A fantastic six days with many fantastic peaks and wonderful ski runs are behind us. With many wonderful memories and great pictures, we will begin our journey home and look back on this touring week for a long time to come.
Any changes to the program that may be necessary for various reasons (weather, conditions, accommodation booking situation, etc.) will always be made in consultation with the participants.
