ABOUT THE TOUR

The Keschtnweg through the Eisack Valley is a truly beautiful long-distance hike in autumn, with its chestnut groves and warm light.
4 days · Eisack Valley

Eisack Valley - Keschtnweg: The Keschtnweg along the Eisack Valley is a special experience, especially in autumn, thanks to the magnificent colours of the chestnut groves lining the route.

Here you are walking on one of South Tyrol’s best-known trails, mostly on pleasant hiking paths, through villages, past farmsteads, and again and again through the typical chestnut groves. The tour has a very special charm during the Törggelen season in particular. Anyone who enjoys spending several days on foot and wants to experience the Eisack Valley step by step is in exactly the right place on the Keschtnweg.

PROGRAM

Day 1: Neustift to Feldthurns
The meeting point and starting point for the Keschtnweg is the Augustinian Canons’ monastery in Neustift. From the monastery, the route leads to Vahrn and on to St. Cyrill. Near Tils, the trail continues more or less level to Wöhrmauerer and then onward to my home village of Feldthurns.
Walking time: 5 hrs | ↑ 600 m ascent | ↓ 350 m descent

Day 2: Feldthurns to Barbian
The second stage leads through beautiful chestnut groves south of Feldthurns, continuing to Weinbrenner and Pardell. The next stop is the spectacular Säben Monastery, perched high on a rock above Klausen. The route then continues down to Klausen, past Branzoll Castle and into the historic old town. Afterwards, the trail climbs through the Thinnetal up to Villanders and then on one village further to Barbian. This is the destination of the second stage.
Walking time: 6 hrs | ↑ 650 m ascent | ↓ 650 m descent

Day 3: Barbian to Leitach
The start of the third stage first takes us for a short stretch along the asphalt road to the Gonderbachgraben and then onward over field tracks onto the Rittner Hochplateau. The destination of the third stage is the hamlet of Leitach, which we reach after a good five hours of walking.
Walking time: 5 hrs | ↑ 450 m ascent | ↓ 450 m descent

Day 4: Leitach to Runkelstein
The fourth and final stage leads us down from the Ritten to Bozen, where the finish is at Runkelstein Castle. We first head to Unterinn and on to the start of the Oswald Promenade, which descends in switchbacks to the fields of St. Peter. From here it is not far to Runkelstein Castle, where a taxi will then take us back to the starting point.
Walking time: 5.5 hrs | ↑ 450 m ascent | ↓ 950 m descent

Any changes to the program that may be necessary for various reasons (weather, conditions, accommodation booking situation, etc.) will always be made in consultation with the participants.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - (FAQs)

Is the Keschtnweg technically difficult?
No, the Keschtnweg is a very manageable long-distance hike on hiking trails, forest tracks, and short asphalt sections. Stamina for several consecutive days is more important than technical skill. Especially in autumn, the tour is for many people a very pleasant way to get to know the Eisack Valley on foot.

What should I bring for the four days?
The most important things are good hiking boots and a suitable daypack. The detailed packing list is sent with the confirmation email. If anything is missing, equipment can be rented from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.

How do I get back after the last day?
The end point of the tour is at Runkelstein Castle near Bozen. From there, a taxi takes us back to the starting point. This allows the traverse to end in a relaxed way, without having to worry about the return journey.
