PROGRAM

Day 1: Neustift – Feldthurns
The meeting and starting point for the Chestnut Trail is the monastery of the Augustinian Canons in Neustift. From the monastery, the route continues to Vahrn and then St. Cyrill. At Tils, the path continues more or less flat to the Wöhrmauerer and then on to my home village of Feldthurns.
5 hours – ↑ 600 meters in elevation gain – ↓ 300 meters in elevation gain – 12.6 km

Day 2: Feldthurns – Barbian
The second stage leads through beautiful chestnut groves south of Feldthurns to Weinbrenner and Pardell. The next stop is the Säben Monastery, spectacularly perched high on a rock above Klausen. The route continues down to Klausen, past Branzoll Castle and into the historic old town. The trail continues through the Thinne Valley up to Villanders and one village further to Barbian. This is the destination of the second stage.
6 hours – ↑ 600 meters elevation gain – ↓ 650 meters elevation gain – 15.3 km

Day 3: Barbian – Leitach
The third stage begins with a short stretch along the paved road to the Gonderbachgraben ravine and then along field paths to the Ritten plateau. The destination of the third stage is the hamlet of Leitach, which we will reach after a good 5 hours of walking.
5.5 hours – ↑ 400 meters elevation gain – ↓ 400 meters elevation gain – 15 km

Day 4: Leitach – Runkelstein Castle
The fourth and final stage takes us from Ritten down to Bolzano, where the final destination is Runkelstein Castle. We first head to Unterinn and then to the beginning of the Oswald Promenade, which leads down through hairpin bends to the fields of St. Peter. From here, it's not far to Runkelstein Castle, where a taxi will then take us back to the starting point.
6 hours – ↑ 450 meters of altitude gain - ↓ 950 meters of altitude gain – 16 km

Any changes to the program that may be necessary for various reasons (weather, conditions, accommodation booking situation, etc.) will always be made in consultation with the participants.
