ABOUT THE TRAINING
Climbing dry rock with ice tools is an unusual, demanding and seriously fun discipline somewhere between climbing and anticipation for winter.
1 day
The term Drytooling refers to a special form of climbing that may not be as popular, but is all the more exciting for it. It involves climbing dry rock with ice tools. On the one hand, ambitious ice climbers like to use it to prepare for the upcoming ice climbing season; on the other, it has meanwhile developed into a small niche discipline of climbing in its own right. The ice tools are placed precisely on hooks and in pockets, and progress is then made either with crampons or climbing shoes. Climbing takes place in specially equipped drytool crags, where the so-called placements for the ice tools are often marked. In conventional climbing crags, climbing with ice tools is not generally welcomed, as the hardened steel picks of the ice axes naturally leave marks on the rock. As climbing often takes place in fairly steep terrain, this type of climbing is particularly well suited to building and training strength and body tension. But basically, it is simply tremendous fun to climb rock with ice tools and to try out this special form of climbing for yourself!

PROGRAM
Drytooling on rock
We meet at the agreed meeting point and head together to one of the drytool crags. Once at the crag, we first familiarise ourselves with the equipment and go through a few general tips and key points. On top rope, we ease into the very particular drytooling technique on easier routes and then, depending on your motivation and energy, work our way up to more difficult routes over the course of the day. Throughout the day, the mountain guide will keep giving you tips on climbing technique and suggestions for improvement.
Above all, however, the focus is on trying it for yourself and enjoying the rock in this special branch of climbing. So: as little theory as possible and as much practice as possible! By the end of the day, you may have discovered a new sport that is especially great fun on days when it is too cold or too wet for rock climbing, or during the transition from autumn into winter, and as a bonus gives your biceps a proper workout for upcoming climbing projects! ;)
Any changes to the program that may be necessary for various reasons (weather, conditions, accommodation booking situation, etc.) will always be made in consultation with the participants.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - (FAQs)
Do I need previous experience for the drytooling workshop?
No, the workshop is designed so that you learn the basics directly on site. If you already have some climbing experience, that naturally helps, but you can still get started well even without any drytooling experience. The mountain guide adapts the content to your level.
What equipment should I bring?
For the workshop, you mainly need suitable clothing and, depending on the conditions, climbing shoes or mountaineering boots. You will receive the exact packing list with the confirmation email. Technical equipment can be hired from your Südtirol mountain guide for a small wear-and-tear fee.
Is drytooling only for ice climbers?
No, not at all. Drytooling is ideal preparation for ice climbing, but it is also great fun for climbers simply as a discipline in its own right. Especially when it is too cold or too wet on the rock outside, it is an exciting alternative.
