PROGRAM
Day 1: Hut Approach, Basics and Equipment Knowledge, Knot Tying, Alpine Hazards and Environmental Influences
We will meet at the agreed meeting point and conduct a brief equipment check at the starting point of our glacier course before beginning the ascent to the hut. In the afternoon, we will review the equipment required for glacier tours and the basics of glacier walking. All participants will also be brought up to date on knot tying and will learn and practice the knots required for the upcoming course content. In the hut, we will focus on map reading and how to navigate the terrain. We will also address environmental influences and the consequent and rapid changes on glaciers as a result of climate change.
Day 2: Belaying and belaying methods, proper walking with crampons and ice axe, falls, crevasse rescue, and tour planning
On the second day, we head out onto the glacier. Using various exercises and techniques, we will hone the participants' crampon technique. We'll learn how to move on the hard ground with crampons and ice axes, and what options there are for moving safely on ice. Falling also requires practice so that you can react correctly in an emergency. What to do if you slip and how to slow yourself down, and what happens if a fellow climber falls. We'll also practice various rescue methods and set them up in a crevasse. This is where the knots we practiced the day before come into play.
In the evening, we'll focus on tour planning. The course participants will then be tasked with planning and preparing a final group tour for the final day.
*On this day in particular, we'll vary the content depending on the participants' level of knowledge and focus on the most important aspects if necessary – it's better to learn the basics properly than to cram too much into one day.
Day 3: Practice Tour
The fourth and final day will be dedicated to the tour planned the previous evening. All learning content will be incorporated into this day, and we will apply everything we've learned to safely reach the summit and back to the parking lot. As course participants, you'll be challenged to do this. As mountain guides, we're always available to offer advice and valuable tips, and we'll intervene if something is misjudged.
Important: The program isn't set in stone. In the mountains, we have to adapt to the local conditions and the weather. Therefore, we'll shift the content around as needed, adapting it to the participants' level of knowledge, and getting the most out of these three days, even if the weather doesn't cooperate! =)
Any changes to the program that may be necessary for various reasons (weather, conditions, accommodation booking situation, etc.) will always be made in consultation with the participants.
