ABOUT THE TRAINING
Ortovox Safety Academy - Freeride and Avalanche Course Advanced: Our "Freeride Advanced" avalanche course is primarily aimed at downhill-oriented ski tourers, freeriders, and on-piste skiers who enjoy exploring off-piste terrain after fresh snowfall.
As with traditional avalanche courses, we will devote a full day to the basics to avoid avalanche accidents as much as possible. We will also learn the necessary skills to effectively master the crucial rescue of fellow skiers in the event of a burial. Under the guidance of our state-certified mountain guides, we will gain a wealth of theoretical knowledge out in the field, but above all, we will enjoy the practical exercises. We will not spend much time on ascents, track making, and switchback techniques, but instead use the cable cars to quickly reach the top and focus on strategies and risk management during the descent.
*The goal of the course is to enable participants to master steeper descents (possibly with abseiling). Therefore, the course is primarily aimed at experienced skiers who demonstrate solid and safe skiing technique even on slopes steeper than 40°.

PROGRAM
Day 1:
Content: Companion Rescue and Avalanche Awareness
We'll meet at the base station (the ski area and region will be agreed upon individually or advertised depending on the course offering), collect our day passes, and head to a quiet corner of the area where we'll extensively focus on avalanche awareness and companion rescue. This day is dedicated to exercises and knowledge transfer. In the late afternoon, we'll work together to plan the next day's freeriding. Depending on the conditions, we'll cover all aspects of conscientious tour planning – this requires initiative, and the mountain guide will be on hand to advise and slow down (or motivate) participants for an exciting program the following day.
Day 2:
Content: Freeriding depending on the tour plan
The second day is designed as coaching rather than a course. Here, participants will implement their plans. The mountain guide will intervene if dangerous or incorrect decisions are made. We'll work as a group and implement all the risk minimization and accident prevention measures we learned the day before. There will also be many new situations throughout the day, which the mountain guide will address, providing plenty of new input. At the end of the two days, the participants will have learned a great deal about freeriding in the Dolomites. They know how to tackle exciting couloirs, even if it requires additional technical aids, and they have the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to safely navigate the winter.
Any changes to the program that may be necessary for various reasons (weather, conditions, accommodation booking situation, etc.) will always be made in consultation with the participants.
