ABOUT THE TRAINING
Ortovox Safety Academy - Freeride and Avalanche Course Advanced: Our "Freeride Advanced" avalanche course is primarily aimed at downhill-oriented ski tourers, freeriders, and on-piste skiers who enjoy exploring off-piste terrain after fresh snowfall.
As with traditional avalanche courses, we will devote a full day to the basics to avoid avalanche accidents as much as possible. We will also learn the necessary skills to effectively master the crucial rescue of fellow skiers in the event of a burial. Under the guidance of our state-certified mountain guides, we will gain a wealth of theoretical knowledge out in the field, but above all, we will enjoy the practical exercises. We will not spend much time on ascents, track making, and switchback techniques, but instead use the cable cars to quickly reach the top and focus on strategies and risk management during the descent.
*The goal of the course is to enable participants to master steeper descents (possibly with abseiling). Therefore, the course is primarily aimed at experienced skiers who demonstrate solid and safe skiing technique even on slopes steeper than 40°.

PROGRAM
Day 1:
Content: Avalanche Rescue and Avalanche Awareness
We'll meet at the valley station (the ski area and region will be arranged individually or specified depending on the course), pick up our day passes, and head to a quiet corner of the area where we'll focus on avalanche awareness and avalanche rescue techniques. This day will be dedicated to practical exercises and knowledge transfer. In the late afternoon, we'll plan the freeriding trip for the following day. Depending on the conditions, we'll cover all aspects of careful tour planning – initiative is key here. The mountain guide will be available to offer advice and either slow down (or motivate) participants for an exciting day ahead.
Day 2:
Content: Freeriding
We're also excited to see where the tour we've planned together will take us on the second day. Today, it's your turn to take the lead. We will teach you group checks, orientation, how to correctly assess the current avalanche situation, how to recognize warning signs, which descents are suitable given the current avalanche conditions, and, if needed, how to rappel down technical sections (e.g., sections). Above all, we will provide a great deal of situation-specific input and share our considerations, arguments, and experiences with you. Here, too, there will be many small tips and suggestions for improvement. It's important to make decisions and discuss them as a group. Naturally, the focus of this program is primarily on downhill skiing and freeriding.
Any changes to the program that may be necessary for various reasons (weather, conditions, accommodation booking situation, etc.) will always be made in consultation with the participants.
