The Via Ferrata della Marmolada along the west ridge – also known as the Hans-Seyffert-Weg – is one of the oldest via ferratas. The tour is a perfect mix of via ferrata, which we tackle on the ascent, and glacier tour, which the traverse becomes on the descent. All in all, it is one of the most rewarding and enjoyable adventures in the Dolomites and the entire Eastern Alps.
The true highlights of the tour are not a difficult via ferrata or a particularly impressive glacier, but the panorama this unique Dolomite landscape has to offer. Especially impressive is the view of the glacier, with Lake Fedaia below on the left and the towering south face on the right. All around, more mighty Dolomite walls and bold spires create a truly exceptional panorama.

PROGRAMME
Day 1: Marmolada traverse
The meeting point for this tour is the car park at Lake Fedaia. At the car park we do a short gear check and then set off. From the car park we climb towards the start of the Via Ferrata della Marmolada, also known as the Hans-Seyffert-Weg. Passing old relics of the First World War, we follow the airy via ferrata to the summit of Punta Penia.
The descent follows the normal route across the glacier and a short via ferrata section, making this a complete and highly rewarding traverse of the Queen of the Dolomites. It is precisely this switch from rock to glacier terrain that defines the character of the tour. You are not simply out on a via ferrata, but on a true alpine tour that offers plenty of variety and calls for a good feel for the terrain.

Info: After a large avalanche on 5 December 2020 struck and destroyed the Pian dei Fiacconi hut, it remains closed until further notice. It will probably be rebuilt at a new location.

Who is the Marmolada traverse suitable for?
The tour suits sure-footed mountaineers with good stamina and fitness who already have some via ferrata experience. The ascent follows a long via ferrata and the descent crosses glacier terrain – it is exactly this combination that makes this alpine tour so appealing.
What equipment do I need for the tour?
You will receive the detailed packing list with your confirmation email. Above all, you need suitable mountain boots and clothing for high-alpine terrain. Technical equipment can be rented from the mountain guides for a small wear-and-tear fee.
What makes this Marmolada tour special?
This is neither a pure via ferrata nor a pure glacier tour, but a well-rounded traverse that shows you two completely different sides of the mountain. The airy west ridge, the descent across the glacier and the views over the Dolomites make the round trip especially varied.
