Up via the Westgrat of Marmolada on the Queen of the Dolomites.

The Via ferrata della Marmolada along the Westgrat – also known as the Hans-Seyffert-Weg – is one of the oldest via ferratas. The tour is a perfect mix of via ferrata, which we climb on the ascent, and glacier mountaineering, into which the route turns on the descent. All in all, it is one of the most rewarding pleasure-filled alpine outings in the Dolomites and the Eastern Alps as a whole.
The real highlights of the tour are not found in an especially difficult via ferrata or a particularly impressive glacier, but in the panorama offered by this unique Dolomite landscape. Especially striking is the view of the glacier with Fedaiastausee lying below on the left and the high south face on the right. All around, more mighty Dolomite walls and bold spires create a panorama of a very special kind.

PROGRAM
Day 1: Marmolada traverse
The meeting point for this tour is at the car park by Fedaiastausee. At the car park we carry out a short gear check and then set off. From the car park we ascend towards the start of the Via Ferrata della Marmolada, also known as the Hans-Seyffert-Weg. Passing old wartime relics from the First World War, we reach the summit of Punta Penia via the airy via ferrata.
The descent follows the normal route, with glacier travel and a short via ferrata section, turning the day into a complete and highly rewarding traverse of the Queen of the Dolomites. This very transition from rock into glaciated terrain defines the character of the tour. You are not simply on a via ferrata, but on a true alpine tour that offers variety and demands a good feel for the terrain.

Info: After a major avalanche on 5 December 2020, in which the Pian dei Fiacconi hut was hit and destroyed, it remains closed until further notice. It will presumably be rebuilt at a new location.

Who is the Marmolada traverse suitable for?
The tour suits sure-footed, resilient mountaineers with good fitness who already have some via ferrata experience. The ascent follows a longer via ferrata, while the descent crosses glacier terrain – it is exactly this combination that gives the alpine tour its appeal.
What equipment do I need for the tour?
You will receive the exact packing list in the confirmation email. Most important are suitable mountain boots and clothing for high-alpine terrain. Technical equipment can be hired from the mountain guides for a small wear-and-tear fee.
What is special about this tour on Marmolada?
You are not doing a pure via ferrata day nor a pure glacier ascent, but a well-rounded traverse showing two very different sides of the mountain. The airy Westgrat, the descent over the glacier, and the views across the Dolomites make the round especially varied.
