ABOUT THE TOUR

Pfunderer High Trail: This high trail takes you through the pristine, rustic, and mostly quite isolated landscape of the Pfunderer Mountains. It connects the two towns of Vipiteno in the Wipptal Valley and Bruneck in the Pustertal Valley. Most of the high trail runs between 2,000 and 3,000 meters, thus living up to its name. Some long stages are to be tackled. For the longest daily stage, with a walking time of 9-10 hours, there is the option of splitting it over two days and spending the night at the Brenninger bivouac.

PROGRAM

Day 1: Wiesen - Simile Mahd Alm
We meet in Wiesen near Sterzing, the starting point of the Pfunderer Höhenweg (Punder High Trail). On the first day, we'll first gain altitude and immerse ourselves in the Pfunderer Mountains. High above Freinfeld and past the Höllenkragen (Hell's Collar), we reach the Trenser Joch (Trentino Pass). From here, it's not far to the Simile Mahd Alm, our first accommodation.
6 hours – ↑ 1,400 meters in altitude – ↓ 350 meters in altitude – 12.5 km

Day 2: Simile Mahd Alm - Brixner Hütte
From the Simile Mahd Alm, the second day continues gently uphill to the Wilder See (Wild Lake), the deepest mountain lake in South Tyrol. Here, there's the option, also because the stage is a bit shorter, to take in the Wilde Kreuzspitze (3,132 m) before descending via the Rauhtaljoch to the Brixner Hütte.
4 hours – ↑ 850 meters elevation gain – ↓ 600 meters elevation gain – 8.5 km

Day 3: Brixner Hut - Edelraut Hut
The third day is the most challenging stage of the hike. From the Brixner Hut, we ascend to the Steinkarscharte col, passing below Grabspitze, Felbe, Hochsäge, and Rote Beil. Two more cols follow, the Kellerscharte col and the Dannelscharte col, before a possible stage destination at the Brenninger bivouac is possible. However, we want to continue to the Edelraut Hut, which we reach from the bivouac in another 3 hours.
9 hours – ↑ 1,400 meters elevation gain – ↓ 1,100 meters elevation gain – 15 km

Day 4: Edelraut Hut - Tiefrasten Hut
From the Edelraut Hut, a longer descent follows through the Eisbrugg Valley. At the bridge that gives the trail its name, a short climb to the Kuhscharte follows, before continuing up and down past several alpine pastures to the Passenjoch. Another pass we must cross before reaching the Tiefrastenhütte is the Hochsägenscharte behind the Huchgrubbachspitze. From here, it's not far to our destination for the day.
6 hours – ↑ 850 meters in elevation gain – ↓ 1,100 meters in elevation gain – 15 km

Day 5: Tiefrastenhütte - St. Georgen
A beautiful final stage awaits us from the Tiefrastenhütte: First, we must reach the small gate. After that, we continue along the ridge over several peaks (Zwölferspitz, Putzenhöhe, Bärentalspitz, Plattenspitz, and Sambock) to the Kofler am Kofl guesthouse. A taxi awaits us here to take us back to Wiesen.
6.5 hours – ↑ 900 meters elevation gain – ↓ 1,700 meters elevation gain – 16 km

If the queen stage, which takes 9-10 hours, is too long and challenging for you, you can extend the tour by another day and split this stage into two days. This creates one stage with a 6-hour walking time and one with a 3-hour walking time. Please let me know if you would like to do this when booking.

Any changes to the program that may be necessary for various reasons (weather, conditions, accommodation booking situation, etc.) will always be made in consultation with the participants.
