ABOUT THE TRIP

Finest spring snow above the Mediterranean – on Crete a ski touring destination awaits that you will not forget in a hurry.
Crete

A very special spring snow area awaits us on the Greek island of Crete. Carving elegant spring-snow turns straight down towards the olive groves, with the azure-blue waters of the Mediterranean always in view, and in the evening discussing your ski technique over Greek wine after showing it off on these perfect ski slopes.

Crete is definitely an exotic ski touring destination that not everyone immediately has on their radar. But the conditions on this island, so far to the south, are in fact not bad at all: high mountains rising from the Mediterranean to almost 2,500 metres. In the coldest months, especially in December, a great deal of precipitation falls, which in good winters creates a substantial snowpack. This can then linger on the slopes of these otherwise barren scree mountains well into April.

Added to that is a climate that creates spring snow conditions otherwise known mainly from southern ski touring regions such as the Abruzzo. This is exactly what makes it so appealing: southern light, Greek ease, and surprisingly good ski terrain. If you fancy something different from the usual classics, this is very much the right place.

HIGHLIGHTS

✧ Perfect ski terrain on peaks up to 2,500 metres high

✧ Greek hospitality

PROGRAM

What an Explorer trip means
In March 2027 we are planning a ski touring trip to Crete for the first time. It is an Explorer trip. Here is a brief explanation of what that means: if you are easy-going, see yourself as an asset rather than dead weight within a group, and stay relaxed even when not everything goes perfectly smoothly, then welcome to our Explorer trips.

Explorer trips are destinations we have not yet visited ourselves. Or exotic destinations that are hard to plan because of unpredictable circumstances. We have a rough programme in mind, but we will remain very open to changes of plan or experiments. That is part of the idea here: not tying everything down to the last detail, but making the most of the best opportunities on the ground – depending on conditions, snow, and the mood of the group.

Open to surprises
Why would I want that? Good question ... what could possibly go wrong? Exactly. If that is how you see it too, we look forward to receiving your booking. This trip thrives on discovering a rather unusual ski touring destination together while staying flexible. Instead of a rigid schedule, there is an open framework within which we choose suitable tours depending on the conditions. That leaves room for spontaneous decisions, good conditions, and exactly the kind of days you will later remember fondly.
Walking time: 3–5 h | ↑ 800–1,300 m ascent | ↓ 800–1,300 m descent | Difficulty: WS–ZS (guideline per day)

Sounds good, but not perfect?

No problem: This is just an idea of how the program for trip could look like. The duration can be extended or shortened as desired. I would be happy to put together a customized itinerary for you or a group, tailored entirely to your ideas and wishes.

Simply send us a non-binding inquiry using the form above.

Any changes to the travel program that may be necessary for various reasons (weather, conditions, accommodation booking situation, etc.) will always be made in consultation with the participants.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - (FAQs)

Who is this ski touring trip to Crete suitable for?
The trip is ideal for ski tourers with solid fitness and an enjoyment of open programmes. Depending on the tour, we will cover around 800–1,300 vertical metres and about 3–5 hours of walking time per day. If you are flexible and keen on a rather unusual ski touring destination, you will get a lot out of this trip.

How fixed is the programme on an Explorer trip?
Deliberately not completely fixed. We have a rough plan, but on Crete we remain open to changes if conditions, snow, or logistics suggest a better option. That is exactly the character of an Explorer trip: discovering an exciting destination together without pinning down every single day months in advance.

What equipment do I need to bring?
The detailed packing list will be sent with the confirmation email. Naturally, the essentials are your ski touring equipment and suitable clothing for spring tours. Missing equipment can be rented from the mountain guide for a small wear-and-tear fee.
