ABOUT THE TOUR
A major four-thousander in the Valais that, via the south ridge, appears surprisingly accessible and yet remains a true alpine mountaineering tour.

Weissmies - Normal route: At 4,023 metres, the Weissmies is not only the highest but also the most imposing peak in the north-eastern part of the Valais Alps. Despite its appearance, with the ice-armoured north-west face and the rocky southern side, the summit also offers less experienced mountaineers a technically relatively straightforward route of ascent.
Without the necessary safety precautions, however, travelling on glaciers carries the risk of falling into one of the large crevasses across these extensive glaciated slopes. While there are no difficult climbing sections to overcome all the way to the summit, steep and crevassed slopes await. With the required know-how and the proper safety measures, the Weissmies is a classic alpine tour and a feasible, rewarding objective even for those taking their first steps into the world of four-thousanders.

PROGRAM
Day 1: Approach to the hut
We meet in Saas Almagell and, after a short gear check, hike up to the Almagellerhütte. Alternatively, a meeting point can also be arranged directly at the hut, and you can complete the roughly four-hour ascent on a good hiking trail past the Almagelleralp on your own and at your own pace. That way, you can set off early in the morning, while it is still not too hot. The mountain guide arrives at the hut in the late afternoon. Together we discuss the tour for the following day, and after dinner we settle into our accommodation for the short night.

Day 2: Weissmies summit day
The next morning, after breakfast, we head towards the summit. First, we ascend to the Zwischenbergpass. From there, the route continues via the Südgrat towards the summit. Easy scrambling and walking sections alternate all the way, making for an engaging tour. In the end, we follow the snow arête to the highest point on the Weissmies. The descent is via the impressive and heavily crevassed Triftgletscher. The actual normal route is not difficult, but it depends strongly on current conditions. Especially in bare ice, this supposedly easy route requires appropriate safety techniques. Once in Hohsaas, we take the cable car down at a relaxed pace back to Saas Grund.

Is Weissmies suitable for beginners?
Yes, the Weissmies is considered a feasible introduction to the world of four-thousanders, provided you are sure-footed and have a good basic level of fitness. However, it remains a real alpine tour with glacier travel, crevasse zones, and changing conditions.
What equipment do I need for the tour?
You need the usual alpine touring equipment, above all mountaineering boots suitable for crampons and clothing for cold conditions. You will receive the exact packing list with the confirmation email. Missing equipment can be rented from Südtirolalpin for a small wear-and-tear fee.
How strenuous are the two days?
The approach to the Almagellerhütte is moderate at four hours, while summit day is significantly more demanding. Overall, for the Weissmies you should have solid fitness for several hours at altitude.
