ABOUT THE TOUR

Zinalrothorn - Normal Route: The Zinalrothorn is considered a top-class four-thousand-meter peak. Even though this tour involves crossing short glacier fields, you'll spend most of your time enjoying the rock climbing. The quality of the rock improves significantly the higher you climb. From the fork onwards, with the subsequent crux at the "Binerplatte" and the ridge climb to the summit, the climb is on fantastic rock and incredibly enjoyable – especially since the difficulty remains moderate, never exceeding UIAA grade III. While it's essential to maintain full concentration throughout the entire tour, and the Zinalrothorn is considered a difficult four-thousand-meter peak due to the length of the tour and the mixed and challenging terrain, it's an absolute dream mountain for fit and sure-footed climbers and a valuable addition to any mountain enthusiast's tour log. =)

PROGRAM

Day 1: Hut Ascent to the Rothorn Hut
We have two meeting points: either in Zermatt at the train station or directly at the Rothorn Hut. The latter has the advantage that you can comfortably begin the very long ascent to the hut at your own pace, early in the morning when it's not yet so hot (an easy and well-marked hiking trail). Once at the hut, we'll end the evening in the new Rothorn Hut, which opened in 2024, and discuss the tour to the summit the next day.

Day 2: Zinalrothorn
We'll start early, as we do at so many four-thousand-meter peaks. After breakfast, in the light of our headlamps, we'll step out into the hopefully starry night and cover a good portion of the ascent in the dark. The countless strings of lights that also make their way to the other four-thousand-meter peaks are wonderful to observe. In the distance, we'll see the cones of light cast by the mountaineers on the Dom, Dufourspitze, and the Matterhorn. The sunrise is even more spectacular; when the first rays of sun bathe the aforementioned peaks in a warm light, we're already high up toward the summit. We skillfully ascend the easiest sections of the wall along the normal route. After the fork, the crux of the so-called "Binerplatte" (III) follows, and soon after, we see the summit cross for the first time, not far away. The upper part of the tour, in particular, runs along the fantastic granite for which the Zinalrothorn is famous throughout the Alps.
At the summit, we enjoy a breathtaking panorama of all the prominent four-thousand-meter peaks in Valais, all the way to Mont Blanc. The descent is partly downhill and abseiling along the ascent route. If you want to avoid the long descent back to Zermatt, I recommend staying another night at the cozy Rothorn Hut and enjoying the tour (the mountain guide will descend to Zermatt later that day).

*Tip for ambitious summiteers and mountaineers: The combination of the Obergabelhorn and Zinalrothorn in three days is also wonderful. On the first day, you climb and spend the night in the wonderfully equipped Arben bivouac with a magnificent panorama of the Matterhorn's north face. The next day, you traverse the Obergabelhorn and Wellenkuppe via the Arben ridge. On the third day, you climb the Zinalrothorn. If you're interested in this combination, let me know when you enquire, and I'll put together a suitable offer for you!

Any changes to the program that may be necessary for various reasons (weather, conditions, accommodation booking situation, etc.) will always be made in consultation with the participants.
